I just got one of these heatsink/fans and I read on the zalman site that the max weight that AMD processors can support is 450g according to AMD. The heatsink weighs 918g. Will this be supported due to the new backplate I have to put on or will it rip off and damage the system?

it will be fine. i have yet to hear about a mb or processor being destroyed by the 7700. i have one installed and the weight of it is supported by the backplate not the mb.
 
What about a S478 motherboard? I want to get one for my IS7 and it does not have a backplate.
 
shouldnt be a issue on those either pcb is made out of mostly copper sheets, found that out when i decided to make a 5950 ultra keychain
 
I have the big 120mm all copper zalmon on my a64 (do not remember what model it is), no problems at all.
 
I still am a little uneasy about strapping 1kg of copper hanging off my motherboard. s478 is the only config where it does not use a backplate.
