i have an asus A8N-E mobo and im trying to get 5.1 audio from it. i have no sound card but my motherboard does have s/pdif and toslink. right now i have it hooked up to the toslink and i can only get stero audio from it. if i hook up my xbox360 to the same input on my reciver it goes staight to 5.1 audio.

and i deas why i cant get 5.1 from my computer?

This could end up into an entire shpiel... But I'll phrase it simply and allow others to put more onto the table.

Long story short, most things on computers are not in 5.1. Your XBOX 360 switches it over, because all of the games are encoded in a specific format (dts, dolby whatever it uses) but natively nothing is coded like that.

Even if you play PC games, most games use 5 discreet channels and not an encoded algorithm, which means you would have to use analog, and use a separate cable for each individual channel.

In short, optical cables on PC's are only good for DVD's or stereo sound. If you want to get a specific audio player that will re-encode your stereo sound into 5.1 you can do that, but then you will get all the issues of upmixing.

thanks alot for the reply, it explained alot.

well even if some things arnt in 5.1 when i do a test that play sound through the speakes at diffrent times i still only get stero or 2.1

I also have 3 3.5mm jacks(center, front, rear,) on my mobo that i could hook up to my receiver but im not sure how to?
