Help with 290X fan replacement

Today when I was gaming I decided to turn my fan speed up manually with ASUS gpu tweak. When I did I heard a rattle then I heard a vibrating sound. I turned off the computer and there was a piece of black plastic on the bottom of the case, it looks like one of the fins to the front fan came off. I'm not sure how this happened but I am bummed and scared that I won't be able to fix this because of the non reference design 3rd party coolers may not work (I'm clueless there) and I know from what I read that newegg and asus probably will say that it is physical damage. If anyone can help me find out how to replace the fan that would mean a lot to me. Thank you.

Oh this is the card

I think the fan breaking may be my fault. I remember accidentally raking my knuckle on the fan lightly when I was fiddling with a case fan. I called Asus. Worst case scenario I pay for a repair. I hope they just decide to replace the front fan since that is all that is I needed. I wonder how much this will cost. Oh well better than having a 290x with a broken fan. Man I feel dumb.

you can ask them if they will send you a replacement fan instead of going through the full RMA process or sending the whole card in for repair.

IT should be pretty easy.

Would have thought Asus fans be a little more durable than that...i have raked my fingers on fans intentionally and only once had one break...let us know if they able to send you just the fan...would look good on them if they did

Trust me I did. It's that it would void my warranty and they document everything, if I ask them for a relacement fan and they know I replaced it myself then I voided it. Sucks but I love this card. Im sending it off today.

Well, I am impressed. I figured I would update this. I got my card back now and it works great. I told asus I broke the fan and they fixed it for free and sent it back to me. I thought I would say something about it given the reputation Asus has for burning people recently. Now I'm not a long time Asus user. I just really liked the build quality of this specific card. They really came through for me. The RMA was relatively fast. The slowest part was my fault I used slow shipping to get it there. I had the card back in a week or less after they had it. I asked for a repair which I said I would pay for. They didn't charge me a dime and treated me very nicely on the phone. I'm happy and impressed. Not to mention I feel like I'm in good hands warranty wise. I can't speak for their mobos or laptop RMA dept. Etc. but when you tell a company you broke a fan yourself and will pay for a repair and they send it back fixed and its not another card (glad its not a different card mine performed well) I say that's good service. Nice job Asus. Reminds me of xfx in 2006...great service.

yeah, and I got 550 for it, so I lost 30 bucks. Never have been so happy to take a loss lol. I'm not saying there aren't good 290 cards out there I was just royaly pissed with this one. After patiently waiting for the 3rd party coolers and seeing a Gold award from HOCP I thought I made a good choice. Ultimately I went witht he 780 TI because I wanted to play around with shadowplay which has been rather cool so far.

What went wrong with the card after you got it back? There was one RMA that came back, than a FUCK ASUS, I was starting to eat some popcorn and then the thread was over :(

1st the card throttled constantly in the same conditions that it used to work fine in. 2nd RMA black-screens no matter what I did, clean installs, win 7, win 8, every driver imaginable. After that I RMA'd the card again and the fucking thing wouldn't even power on. 4th I was pissed and had it demanded a refund and settled with a brand new card, it worked and I sold the POS.

I felt like I should update this. I got a reply to the review I left on newegg much to my surpise. What should I expect? I still have the card luckily. It only works with the stock asus 13.12 drivers that came with the card. Here is the reply.

I am not spening any more $$ on this thing. If with some magic they actually do fix the card and it works as well as the gold award winning card that H got to review, should I use it? OR should I keep using my 780ti? The 780 has been f'ing great since day 1. Still faster than I need :) I run 1200p with lot's of dsr. I wrote an email back to the guy with my concerns, even sent a link to my account on here, the review which made me want to get the card, and a link to the thread where dude got a 780 back for his 780ti (that is a concern). I'll tell you what he writes back.

Not sure if I'm drunk or if some vital pieces of information are missing from these posts...

Either way, looking forward to reading more!

Ok, I'm confused here.

I don't blame you. It was an old thread. I forgot to update all the little details. I did "sell" the card to a friend of mine after trying the drivers that came with the card and thinking it worked ok. Then when he told me that he updated the drivers and it was going to shit on him I knew what was happening and I refunded him and took the card back. It has been working OK with the 13.12 drivers (ones that came with the card). It freezes every now and then, but when I update the drivers the thing goes apeshit. I've tried it in serveral rigs as well. Tried everything you can think of. I hope this Asus rep is going to help me out. I'll be sure to update when I hear more. I do apologize, this happened so long ago I forgot that I even attempted to sell the thing to my old roommate. :p

If it was only working with older drivers, maybe the card has an older bios that conflicts with newer drivers. Check to see if you can update it, might be worth a shot.

I appreciate the advice. But I have tried that many times. Even once recently. It didn't help matters.
