Purchased a 2.4c and P4P800 Deluxe combo. 2x256 Kingston Hyper-X 3500 DDR .

I am having trouble reaching a stable "good" overclock. Currently I am running at 225 FSB ~2.7Ghz, turbo mode, pam enabled, dram set to spd, vcore auto. Around 78F at idle and 95F under load. At this speed, Prime95 will complete a Max test. However, I want more speed obviously and a stable system.

I overclocked earlier to 230FSB, put the vcore up to 1.6 and was able to complete 1 out of 3 Prime95 benches, the other 2 aborted due to "hardware failure." Anything above 230 and I get errors on WinXP load. Temps were 89F idle, 110F under load.

Pretty disappointing numbers after reading all the 3+ overclocks.

Please advise.

System Specs are as follows.
Fresh XP install
2.4C P4 retail HSF (don't plan on upgrading til temp is as issue.)
Asus P4P800 Deluxe
2x256 Kingston Hyper-X 3500 DDR
ATI Radeon 9600xt @ 8x
Enermax 365VPE (350 watt PSU)
3 x hard drives, 2 x cdrom/cd-rw
Ambient temps in room ~75F

turn from turbo to normal mode it doesnt do much and can make system quite unstable. i noticed this on my friends p4p800-D and also my p4c800-d

Yep turbo mode restricted mine as well. Turn it to normal and lose that 1-2% boost (oooo big whoop...lol), however you gain alot more in Mhz to easily make up for it.

stepping?

I wish someone would make a sticky about posting steppings. This is, afterall, the "Overclocking & Cooling."

Yes... some people will advise you that steppings mean nothing. They are idiots, of course ;)

Actually, I don't know. I took a look at it when I installed it (bout a month ago), yet I didn't write it down. Is there a list available of the different steppings and their countries? If I saw it, I might be able to remember. I'm thinking it was Malaysia or Costa Rica?

Anyways, I'll try disabling turbo when I get home from work and let you guys know. Thanks.

Well I turned off turbo and it made no difference. Anything past 230 and I get a BSOD at the XP splash screen.

Any other ideas?

If I remember correctly, I do believe my stepping is one of the Costa Rica ones...if that helps any?

What is the vcore droop like under load? That could easily be affecting stability.

memory ratio? Set to 3:2 until you max out the CPU
spread spectrum? Set to off
pam enabled? Set to off

ASUS probe has it around 1.61-1.63, under full load (prime95) it will drop to 1.55 or lower. This does seem to be at the same time, prime95 halts due to "hardware failure."

I had originally thought it might be the PSU, but wanted to post for other opinions.

BTW, what is the default and max vcore for a 2.4C?

//Edit: let it be noted, when I push the board to 235, it will error out before entering windows (at the splash screen.) Not sure what kind of load is at that point, but it routinely does it at that exact point.

I'm not sure how to change the memory ratio on my board (ASUS P4P800 Deluxe.) Is it simply a matter of changing it to something other than 400? or is there a divider setting that I'm missing?

I have tried AGP/PCI at 66.66/33.33 with no help.

Spread specturm is off.
Pam has been tried with on and off...no help there either.

Update:

Turned my memory ratio (after finding it) to 320 and putting my vcore at 1.6, diabling all memory/turbo settings and spread spec, I'm now running at 250FSB/3.0Ghz. I am able to run prime95 successfully.

Also, My temp under load is 120F, 90F idle. Not too bad for a retail HSF, even with that jump.

Oh, and no voltage drops...constant 1.6-1.615

yah nice temps

but for the future p[ut everything as celicus, thats hwo you give temp for CPUs generally
