Help! Wirless Zero Config lag spikes

I am having trouble with online gaming due to the lag spikes XP wireless zero config causes every minute. UT3 is especially a pain in the ass with this problem. So i can disable the WZC config and it fixes the problem - all would be good except my WRT54g will boot me off every now 20 minutes or so (there is really no pattern to it, just happens every now and again at least once an hour.) With WZC enabled I don't get booted off (but it spikes,) I guess it just automatically reconnects everytime that happens.

I upgraded the firmware on my router to the linux firmware http://www.wrtrouters.com/guides/upgradetolinux/ and it is still the same deal. I can play games on my neighbors wireless with WZC config disabled no problem and it will stay connected. So is there any way to disable how it tries to search for networks every minute and causes spikes without disabling the service, or simply change the interval to something really high? I have heard this is a problem with the WRT54g v5 (the connection getting dropped.) Can something be changed on it to keep me from getting booted?

Also I have tried changing channels and all that but it makes no difference.

The wireless card is Linksys WMP54Gv4. The router is Linksys WRT54g v5. I get the same problem with my laptop which i have a few different WiFi cards for.

I would like to solve this problem without installing Linksys software to manage my wireless connect if at all possible. Maybe there is software that can manage it but not specific to Linksys?

Can someone suggest an AP that is worth a damn? Something solid that will last for under 100$.

This problem is driving me nuts!

Thanks

Anyone?

I installed the utility that came with my linksys drivers. What a joke it won't even launch.

I had the exact same problem a couple months ago. I had been using the Linksys drivers (which have their own wireless config utility). Then, upon upgrading my machine, I opted to use Windows built-in Wireless Zero Configuration. What a mess. It took me a week to track down the problem. Eventually, I switched back to the linksys stuff, which got rid of the lag spikes.

If you can't or won't use the Linksys wireless config utility, there is a fix out there for WZC. It's a bit of a pain to use, if I recall. It's essentially a .bat that you run at system startup. It starts the WZC, and, once the wireless is configured properly, shuts off the WZC service, so that it stops periodically trying to look for/connect to other wireless networks. Can't remember the name of it, so you may have to search around.
