my rig:

asus-sli
amd 3700
7800gt
sata drive
winxp pro sp2
enermax 535w psu

just built it the other day, installed winxp pro sp2, installed drivers ..worked well enough at first then I noticed I couldnt download apps ..every program/zipped file I tried opening gave an error message saying it was corrupt. I cant download drivers, bios updates cuz nothing will unzip/open

another problem ..why is my hardrive recognised as removable media? ..there's a "safetly remove hardware" button on my tray and it shows my only hd ..the sata drive

still another problem ...I'll also have problems viewing large images in browsers ..it's almost as if only part of the file downloads when I view an image

one last problem ..I cant update world of warcraft because I continually lose connection and or crash and re-start all together

I'm pilling what little hair I have left outta my head out of sheer frustration ..if I could install new drivers or update bois at least I'd be actively doing something to figure out the problem ...but I cant even do that

HELP!!! administer a sedative if need be :)

The removable drive part is normal, depending on what chipset you board uses and what chipset drivers are loaded.

As far as the downloading problem, I've only ever heard of that when the system memory was bad. Try running memtest. Also make sure your NIC drivers are up to date.

Sounds to me like a network related problem not an XP prob.

Are you Cable, DSL, or some sort of Dedicated Line?

I've seen this problem before.. as I recall the asus board has 2 nics.. on is a yukon the other is a marvel.. ..try using the other or make sure the drivers are installed...

Well actually one is the Nforce4 NIC...

If using this one you should make sure you have the latest chipset drivers, although I used older ones with my A8N-SLI before I sold it, I just didn't install the Network Access Manager and Nvidia Firewall because they caused problems

k I should have warned you I'm a newb

"nic"? "yukon the other is a marvel"

huh?

J-Mag, I'm on cable

I cant install drivers cuz I cant download them. I'll try to get ahold of memtest but until the downloading thingy is fixed I cant cuz everything comes out corrupted :(

NIC is Network Interface Card....aka the ethernet or network connection.

LOL I forgot about that.

Anyway, you could always use another rig somewhere else and then put it on a USB key or something.

You say you are running off a cable modem. Have you ever had it work properly? Is this just a new thing? When did it start?

Download (gotta download stuff, di it on another PC ;) ) the ultimate boot CD, link in sig. Test the ram overnight for grins. It's a new rig and all...

it was working fine in my old rig ..this started when I set up my new computer

I'm at work atm and trying to dl without getting caught :E

so the basic version is good enough? my god there's a ton of apps in there ..where do I start?

Sorry, wrote a quick post earlier from class. :D

Run memtest86+, let it go for a few hours/overnight. I suggested overnight so this doesn't add to testing time as much.

There are no options to set, just select memtest from the menu and it'll start until you stop it (reboot). 0 errors=pass, anything else fails. Good luck.

Personally I doubt it is a memory issue, because there would be other symptoms such as locks, blue screenies, freezes, corrupt windows files etc... Although you never know...

I am guessing either:
1. Bad Drivers (corrupt or old) - easy to fix and do this first deifnately d/l newst nofrce chipset drivers
2. Bad Ethernet port on Mobo (try the other one)
3. Damaged ethernet cable (unlikley, but test out another one just to be sure)

Agreed, it's just something to get out of the way when the PCs not doing anything.

I haven't read any docs, just posts, that the software IDE driver is no good. May want to skip that during the nforce driver setup. Also consider a loose or bad IDE cable. Then there's the whole slew of things in Ice Czar's Corruption101 thread. ;)

are there 2 ethernet jacks on the back of the card like j-mag suggested.. try the other.

also let us know the deal with your device manager and if there are any errors

Did you find a solution to why your machine was doing that? I'm having the same problems right now with a rig I just built last weekend. Except for the PSU (OCZ PowerStream 520), it looks like our setups are identical. If you found a solution, please post it, so I can get mine working too. Thanks.

Just in case you haven't found the solution, I got lucky and found it yesterday. The problem is with the Nvidia network applications, both the Firewall and ActiveArmor. I removed the Nvidia Network Applications files through add/remove programs and the problems went away immediately. If you haven't gotten your problems fixed yet, try that.
