Help! weird noise

Nero froze, like always when I maually stop it, so I restarted my computer. Then right after I got into windows, it made a noise like a snap, kinda like if a cable was streched too far and broke. After that it was almost like an acceralting engine: a louder lower, increasing nosie. I immediately turned it off and let it cool down. I think the sound came from the front of case, possibly by the hard drives's. I waited maybe 5 minutes and turned it back on, everything checked out fine. It sounded serious but it doens't appear to be so.

Does anyone know what it could've been, or what I shoud check?

I have 2 WD hard drive's, 2 optical drives, case fans, 2600+ mobile, NFII Ultra infinity. Not sure what else I need to tell you guys.

sounds like your hd seeked loudly and then something spun up (cd-rom, hd, whatever)
 
good guess, but that's not it, when i said everything checked out there was one thing I didn't look at, opening the cd drives. My dvd drive wouldn't open, so i thought maybe that broke.

Well let me go back a litte, i stopped nero because i was burning a cd, from the dvd to the cdrw drive but it was taking forever, like 1% /min. So after 10 i stopped it, rebooted and the noise happened. All the drives were detected but the dvd wouldn't open, not even the manual paper clip hole. But the green light would come on tring to read it, so i hit it like 10 times and finally it opened adnd 50 cd fragments were all that was left.

So somehow it broke inside the drive, some parts are still in there. Damn cheap dvd drive from office max. and actually now that i think of it, whenever it first spins up, it makes a wobbly noise like the cd isn't spinning straight, so that probably put too much pressure on it and snapped it into many many parts.

At least it was a cheap drive not my whole computer, but still I was copying that cd and now the original is broke w/o a copy.

Don't blame the drive - it was a defective/stressed CD. They explode when spun too fast sometimes. Apparently its getting more and more common.

Thanks for the tip, maybe I'll keep the drive yet. What's the best way to empty out the small shards stuck inside of it?

take it out, pop the case off it and use some compressed air to get it all out, also shaking it upside down over a garbage bin usually works well..
