I had a old rig with a 6600GT, replaced it with a X850XTPE ( no format, just driver cleaner ), and replaced the X850XTPE with a X1950 pro, problem is; the performance of the X850 is the same as the X1950 (5500 3dmark05) which is horribly low. Heres the rest of the system:

P4 3.0GHz
Cats 6.12
1GB (shitty ram)


Is the ram holding me back or is there something else to this :confused:
 
By shitty ram do you mean some no-name standard 400mhz DDR ram or some 266 or 333mhz DDR?

Even with some standard 400mhz ram you should get a lot higher result so I think it is something else. Your CPU isn't the fastest one and these high-end cards need a really fast CPU to shine. I have a X1950XT card and I still can push it to the limit with my CPU running at 4000+ speeds.

Also, have you set your graphics driver to highest performance, turned off AA and AF, turned off V-sync? Makes a lot of difference on your score.
 
GT1 - Return To Proxycon 21.2 fps
GT2 - Firefly Forest 15.0 fps
GT3 - Canyon Flight 37.4 fps


Barely went up. 5712 3dmark05. I think this is super low, and real gaming performance from the X850 is negligible. Think its time to format?
 
Yeah a format might do some good, especially if you have installed and uninstalled a lot of drivers and programs/games.

Just as comparison I ran some 3dMark-05 on different CPU and RAM speed. I have an AMD 64 3200+ single core CPU that runs at 2000mhz standard, 2x512mb Twinmos value 400mhz RAM and a Sapphire X1950 XT 256mb. The card runs at standard speed, not much use to overclock it when my CPU is bottlenecking it.

Standard speeds CPU 2000mhz RAM 400mhz Card AA off, AF off, V-sync off, high perfomance settings, 8933 points.
CPU 2200mhz RAM 440mhz Card AA off, AF off, V-sync off, high perfomance settings, 9684 points.
CPU 2386mhz RAM 434mhz Card AA off, AF off, V-sync off, high perfomance settings, 10150 points.

So you see that when your CPU is bottlenecking your card a small overclock make a big difference in 3dMark. I'm still nowhere close to have a fast enough CPU to get the most out of this card though.
 
Well I formatted, and the 3dmark only went up by 50. Im just confused as to how I got the same amount of 3dmarks with my X850XTPE as with the X1950PRO
 
I think it is mainly the CPU that is holding you back and is a severe bottleneck with this card in 3dMark-05

If you still got the X850 card you should try to run both cards in a game and on a number of resolutions, bet you will see some difference then.
And there's another big difference between the cards, the 850 used shader model 2, all the X1000 series use shader model 3. ;)
 
Yes, 3dMark-06 is better at showing you what your card can do.
I get 4573 points with AA, AF, V-sync off, rest set to high quality.

Now that score isn't really interesting as 3dMark gives you bonus points for a fast CPU and even more with a dual-core or a quad-core CPU.
What is interesting and pretty much the same no matter what CPU you use is SM2.0 Score and HDR/SM3.0 Score.

Me I get:
SM2.0.............2153
HDR/SM3.0.....2419
and that's pretty much the same I've seen from people using a highly overclocked Intel Core 2 Duo processor.
 
I think I got 1900/2000 for the sm3.0/hdr tests.

I've seen improvement in almost all my games except NWN2, and NFSMW. For some reason, the fps is still rock bottem in those games.
 
I'd say overclock your processor, or get a new one... I think its definitely a CPU bottleneck
 
How is it a CPU bottleneck if my COD2 FPS went from 30~ to ~60.

The thing with NWN2 is that its a buggy ass game. And for some reason, no matter how high I turn the settings in NFSMW it never changes and is still hovering low 20s
 
In COD2 with a 6600GT and 2.8ghz p4 running @ 3.36 I was getting ~50FPS @ 1600x1200 with max detail settings and 2xAA and anisotropic filter enabled. I was only using DX7 though. If you can overclock you processor with your motherboard and cooling then that will probably help you alot.

Some games are very heavy on the graphics card and not the CPU, others it's the reverse.
COD2 is a game the benefits a lot from a faster graphics card but a faster CPU would gain you almost nothing.

NFSMW is the other way around, would benefit a lot from a faster CPU. Me I could run it at over 30fps with a geforce 6600gt and my AMD64 3200 a little bit overclocked.
Sure I needed to set the graphics a bit lower so the graphis card wouldn't be a bottleneck.
