HELP w/p4 overheating

i using a toshiba satellite with a 2.8GHZ P4 processor. the thing doesnt seem very stable. it likes to overheat alot when running itunes, firefox, and some other 3rd application....and then just shuts off....

i dont really know what to do or what would be causing it to overheat so badly.

is there anything i can do other than run a system restore and see what that does?
is this a common problem with the p4 in laptops? toshiba laptops specifically?

any info would help.
 
Do you feel any moving air from the exhaust grill (moving hot air)? Its possible the exhaust fan has died on you and thats why its overheating, its alot easier for a laptop to overheat due to how constricted all the parts are.
 
yes. i do feel airflow. in fact, there are 2 fans and both run. the larger fan usually kicks in really hard before it turns off. and it blows air down, out of the computer instead of blowing air into the computer.

is this the direction it is supposed to blow? i cant think of any reason why it would have changed to the opposite direction, but i thought i would ask.
 
ok. my problem has bee solved. the i took the computer to best buy because it was still under warranty, and they did determine that there was something wrong with one of the fans. thanks for your help.

Yep... thankfully the P4 and A64s will throttle down, or shut themselves off if things get too roasty. (Not like the early Athlons, where it would just fry...)

Glad you got it resolved. I've seen too many computers (especially newer ones that use heatpipes to get both gpu and cpu to one location so only one fan is needed) have a thick layer of dust accumulate somewhere between the heatsink and something. The fan will be spinning fast fast fast but it won't be of any help.
