Need help OCing my computer with a intel i5 750 2.67 stock CPU. I have aftermarket HS/Fan & running a Gigabyte GA P55AUD3 mobo w/ 4gigs ram. Any help is appreciated!
 
Go in the BIOS find the BCLK setting and get it into manual mode an then change BCLK from 133 to 160 with no other changes at all. Then run IBT (Intel Burn Test) to test stability.
 
I had that exact MoBo but with an i7 860 on my last build, there are some good overclocking videos on YouTube that should help you get an understanding, but don't expect to have the same values with the same results as they do.

What exactly are you needing help on? I'd recommend learning about each value and what each value does when you increase/decrease it, that way you're better prepared and more acquainted with the functions.
 
What dresch said. That's about as high as a 750 can go without increasing CPU voltage, lowering RAM multiplier, and disabling turbo/power saving features.

If you're stable after doing what he said, and get acceptable temps, you can likely go farther if you want.
 
Ok I did that seems to be running fine. What is a decent amount of vcore that I should add & what can these cpus usually reach w/a slight increase in vcore? Also what temps are safe? This is my first Intel build Im used to AMD. My computer in general doesnt seem to be running as fast as a 3.5ghz quad core should be...Any ideas what might be wrong?
 
For Intel, you want to stay under 85C on max load.
But anything under 95C is safe.

I would keep it under 1.4V

I would not worry about any full load temp under 90C on an Intel processor (core2 or newer).
 
When I run intel burn do I use default settings or change to 4 threads & change the memory settings to high?
 
Im at 3.570 high memory settings with stock vcore & 4 threads successful test. Temps on high/load were 72 on hottest core..

72 is actually pretty warm for 3.6, though not high enough to worry about. What cooler are you using?

I had a 760 for a few months, 3.6 was as high as I could get it without increasing the voltage, and even then it topped out at an even 4.

Assuming you're responding to my temp comment, my 760 never went above 50c with a Mugen 2. As I said, 72c isn't anything to worry about; I was just wondering what cooler he has.
 
Hmm, I would expect that cooler to do better.

As for the multiplier, I think that's turbo boost (or is it speedstep?) kicking in. You'll be disabling those if you want to OC farther.

Whether or not going from 3.4 to 4 will give you a noticeable difference depends on your graphics card and what games you are playing. All I can suggest is to run some benchmarks at both speeds and see.

A quick and dirty way to hit 4GHz would be to bump the vcore to 1.3V, set the base clock to 200, CPU multiplier to 20, RAM multiplier to 8 (assuming your RAM is rated at 1600, if it's only 1333 then set it to 6), and lastly disable Turbo and C-states, C1, C2, C-anything, as well as Load Line Calibration. If your comp still shuts down, bump up the vcore in tiny increments. Try not to go past ~1.35V.

Both. You are seeing turbo boost with anything > 20.

BTW whenever I up it anywhere past 170 my computer shuts down.

If you want to push it further you need to do a more advanced overclock then just modifying the BCLK and processor voltage.

So what speed am I at really?

In terms of how far you've actually pushed it? 3.4. CoreTemp is only showing 3.whatever because of Turbo Boost, which will have to be disabled if you want to go any higher.
 
I just want to have it at a safe vcore/temp bc I dont plan to upgrade anytime soon...Is it true that bumping vcore can cause more damage to CPU than not upping the vcore at all? Is is that a myth?

I believe so. However it depends on how much you bump the voltage. Don't worry even at 1.4V your cpu will last 5+ years. I have some overclocked CPUs here at work that have been overclocked for 10 years..
