Help w/ a decision AMD/Intel?

OK, so first of all i would like to ask people not to flame and so on, this is not a fan boy war. I need to know what is better to get now, ill specify closer between what im deciding.


alright so my friend needs a new machine and he is undecided on what to get. Now some of the things that are ruled out are Prescott and Barton, prescott being too hot and bartons too slow. Also this isnt a top notch machine, its somewhere in the middle.

What i was gonna recommend to him was a P4 3.0E Ghz with an ABIT Max3 875PE board, but i told him to ask about AMD because i have no clue about them. He told me he was told that A64 AMD would be a better choice and also cheaper. so thats my question what would be better? Lets say for a sub $400-$450 mobo+CPU+RAM combo? 2x256MB of ram btw.

please dont post any fan boy comments i need a true facts about these CPUs, hes gamer, and he also downloads alot of movies, and stuff from the internet, burns DVD and so on.

Would he benefit from HT? I know that 3.0E with abit mobo and 3200 corsair ram would cost him about $390-$450 depending on whether its 865PE or 875PE, would amd with similar/better performance be cheaper?

and also if AMD is a better choice could u recommend me some good mobos at around ~$160 range? maybe little more since AMD CPUs are cheaper, but something that is stable.

and if u have some better ideas for Intel then i stated please fill me in.

AMD processors blow away Intel processors in gaming. This isn't just a claim..it's pretty much fact now. The architectures are completely different allowing AMD to have an edge. The shorter pipeline and ability to execute more instructions per clock cycle definitely helps in gaming. In everything else AMD and Intel are pretty much on par..so..yeah go AMD.

Bartons too slow? They overclock really really well though..but in this time A64 might be a better idea..or at least Socket 939, so the rig will be easier to upgrade in the future.

Anyways, since he's a gamer and sounds like he doesn't multitask too much go for the AMD 64, it whoops the sh!t outta the prescotts. And if he's going to overclock go with the new Winchestor 90nm AMD 64's. The mobo i hear is a good one is the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum nForce3. As for ram get any unless your going to OC get some sticks with TCCD or ram with 2-2-2 timings in em.

whats up mark! how have you been?

I havent really been following AMD side or even intel side since the prescots came out so i really have no idea. But are there any more good boards out? ASUS? ABIT? for some reason i trust those companies more. I dunno i might be wrong. ill check that MSI out, is it in the price range?

i dont think hes gonna be overclocking, 3200 2-3-3-5 corsair will be good enough for him.

Socket 939? is that AMD or Intel? any mobos with that chipset?

well i was reffering to slow as of stock performace nowdays is kind of slow for bartons, since they r older processors.

ok great, that neo2 mobo only runs for 136 on new egg is thats one of the best mobos on market thats a great deal. its also 939 socket
