So... I just replaced my old mobo and CPU (Asus P4S800 and P4 3.0E) with newer stuff.

I've got all the parts I need to build a new system with my used mobo and CPU. Here's the problem:

I plug the PSU into the mobo (which still has the CPU attached), put RAM on, put video card on, and power on... The CPU fan (and any other fans) start to spin.. and nothing else happens. I don't get a post at all. I don't get anything on screen either.

The power button will not turn the system off once powered on either.

I need an answer to this very very fast!

Please help me out.
 
why did you plug in the power first and then plugged all the items in ?

maybe change your surge protector... double check jumper settings .... make sure you have a cmos battery inside the mobo .... plug in the computer directly in the wall ... make ure your video card is connected right ... make sure your onboard speaker is connected ....
 
I've done all of that including plugging everything in again and power last.

I've tried multiple video cards and multiple case speakers.

have the following setup

psu, mobo, processor, heatsink/fan and mobo speaker

turn it on
it must make "where the f is the ram" sound

Upon seeing your suggestion, I tried it again... No difference...
 
Yeah... That's the only thing I can think of at this point as well...

Can anyone tell me what steps I should use to remove my CPU?

It's a P4, socket 478, retail HSF with a regular thermal pad.
 
I tried the mobo in and out of the case.

I also tried the PSU in and out of the case, all all combinations of the two...
 
Put the whole thing outside of the case, just put it on the table and run it (though, you'd need to get the case power/reset wires enlongated to plug it in). I believe it may be that case plugs that's stopping you.

did you use the screw extenders that look like

You put them between the case and the motherboard.

I remember my friend screwed his mobo straight in without them and he could not turn on his computer ...
 
Yup.. I used standoffs. and I also tried doing it completely outside of the case with a standalone beep/speaker and a screwdriver to start it... Same result... :(
 
what about clearing CMOS? did you do that? also try different sticks of ram in different slots.. if still won't get any beeps, remove the CPU and power your system..
 
I agree with the most wanted have you tried that. Also look to make sure the jumper is not already set at the clear cmos setting.

one of my systems does that - makes a 2 tones beeps - sounds like a police siren.. didn't try that "trick" with my other setups.. and booting w/o the CPU should clear the previous info about CPU config..

I have not tried removing the CPU.

pentiums are not fun to remove
 
Maybe make sure that the hsf is plugged into the motherboard on the cpu fan header. If it is detecting no fan rpm, it may not boot.

Removing the cpu is no big deal. Turn everything off (duh!), grab the two levers on the hsf and lift them at the same time to release the pressure. Remove the hsf, exposing the cpu. Installing do the same thing, I just always do both levers at the same time to keep the pressure even as it clamps down.
 
The hsf is plugged in and the fan does spin when powered on.

Can anyone think of anything else I should try before removing the CPU and trying to get an RMA on the mobo?
 
Do you have a spare rig you can yank a CPU out of to test it with or vice versa? I usually start swaping out components till something happens or putting them in another rig to try and reproduce the problem.
 
Yeah, the first time I bought a new mobo (go figure) I had that same problem; turned out to be the mobo. RMA'd, never had a problem since!
 
The weird thing about that is that the CPU/mobo were running games the very morning before I pulled them out...
 
Did you remember to plug in the 4pin power cable into the motherboard in addition to the 20pin connector? Also, what power supply are you using?
 
Yes, I remembered...

I was using a 420W Thermaltake and then switched to a 400W Coolmax. I know the last two were both working units.
