hi:
i m trying to figure out wich system i should pick....and i m gettin really confused.
its single purpose its for intensive work in apps like cad and max...i m having problems to choose between amd or intel...and i can t figure out wich graphic card should i go for... at the office i m on a XW6200 workstation single P4 3.0 1Gig with a nvidia quadroFX 1300...it s awesome!...but of course im on a tight budget...so wich system is the bang for the buck?wich configurations either on cpu s and graphics should i look for?

i know intel might be a step forward in cad and 3d apps...i m not realy concerned about the cad stuff....but the 3d is my major interest! and my point is (thanku DaveSimmons) if the extra buck is really worth it...
i m now leaning over AMD...i ve been reading a lot...i think i would try a A64 3200 or 3400 (winchester) with a pumped mobo, 1 or 2 Gig ram and probably a quadro....not sure dough...as i ve been told tha the $ might not be worth it...
i WAs thinkin on goin dual...but i gave up....i don t think its worth it and i rather save now an buil a render farm in a short time....(?)

another thing on my mind is the GPU concerning renderin task....im really confused here...i check out the gelato app from nvidia but i couldn t get it clearer ...is the graphic card used in rendering? can it be? how?

First off type coherently. Just because you're on a forum doesn't mean you can spout things off like a 3rd grader on mountain dew. Type like you'd write a report, people will take you a lot more seriously, they will be able to understand you better, and you will probably get a quicker response.

I would probably go with the Intel based for 3d work. Their FPU is still the best out there. As for the 3d rendering side of things. The video card doesn't normally handle the final render, I've never of one that does but I could be wrong. That's usually done by the cpu. The video card will mainly allow you to work with large scenes that have a lot of meshes with out freaking out and running slow.

As for going dual, if you're going to be doing alot of 3d work, the dual athlon's will perform quite a bit better than the p4 for apps written to take advantage of smp.
 
you want an intel xeon workstation if you are going to be doing serious work in cad, video editing and the like. amd procs for some reason have never really been able to support that particular application properly.

i would recommend a dual xeon mobo + single xeon 3.2ghz 400/533fsb, low-grade 3dlabs wildcat graphics card, and stuff along similar lines. you will end up paying around $3000 for this system.

if you are not really into doing serious work, but still want to kick around with that stuff, then system #2 is fine. however, you will not have all the benefits of the full workstation (i.e. something like 8mb ram for all those 68mb coreldraw files)

i appoligize...

i m considering to spend around 700€ =950USD...
i m deftinly leaning torwards amd and match it up with a geforce 6600 graphic card.
what do u think?
 
1. the graphics card isnt typically a major component in rendering a file for output
(for instance a cluster wouldnt even have a card per se)
Also, remember that in hardware your CPU and memory translate to your workstation's rendering speed whereas your video card (and to a minor extent your CPU) handle your onscreen viewport performance. That is, with few exceptions a fast video card does nothing for final rendering speed. Understand the difference.

2. Its would be hard to answer your question without knowing exactly what frontend and backend you have or plan to use 3ds max\mental ray vs softimage\mental ray vs maya\mental ray or say a higher powered backend like Renderman Pro

however a personal bias, animation will be one of the first long coded 64 bit aps
and the socket 940 AMD boards will accept dual core processors (per their statements)

I've seen both, but it seems to me "Quoted for Truth" is used more often around here.
