Apparently I bricked or sent one of my c3560 PoE-24 switches into an ASCII dump or whatever by forcing it into ROMMON mode. Then issuing the command set baud 57600 in to delete the current IOS to free up space for an updated IOS. Then got the following output:

Then I found this guide:

, but it's supposed to display this:

I would ask Cisco for help, but they are closed right now and probably won't help me anyway because I'm not a Cisco partner considering I don't own a business. I bought the 3560 PoE-24's Refurbished without a service net contract, which wouldn't be available for these things anyway because their end of Life considering the 36xx's series replaced them. I tried to update IOS because I thought I needed 12.2(46) and only had 12.2(35), but the other three allowed me to do Lab 2.1 in version 6 of the Lab Manual. However, if I need 15.0(3) to do labs from version 7 of the Lab manual for IP Switch I'm outta luck because I can't afford even Multi-Layer 3650's at this time or anytime soon enough as far I can tell and those are the cheapest Layer 3 switches with that IOS as far as I know.

I'm a student at a pretty major University right now, so it doesn't seem practical for me to become a business right now. However, the school is limiting me to only using their equipment during open lab, but what if I need to get something done earlier in the week and how am I supposed to know in advanced if the Open Lab gets cancelled becuase its not posted on the student portal or emailed to all IT students who need to know. I've addressed my concerns to the faculty and staff, but they seem to just expect me to deel with this like everyone else. However, I know other students who pretty much did the same or I think already have a business, so why talk me out of it and make me do things the hardware with all those restrictions. After all these things are not connected to the internet and it's hard to say if they ever will because I don't know if I'll every get to use them for my business in time or even want to for that matter.

Packet tracer can only do CCNA level stuff and Virl is out of the question to for the above reasons as well as because my School is not officially part of the Cisco Academy if I'm not mistaken. Also, Virl is also out of the question because I can't successfully log in without the page locking up, so that I can buy the academic version.

I found that I may need to use the unset command, so I tried it and get this:

switch: unset BAUD 57600

Variable 57600" not set, or is readonly.

switch:

Now what because I can't find an answer on how to unset a readonly variable?

From what I'm reading here:

Diference between copy run star and write mem on Views (RBAC) - 61074 - The Cisco Learning Network

copy running-config startup-config is the same thing as write memory or wr except the syntax, so that make it look even more like a write core is needed. However, I may be rushing this considering I've done everything else seceral time the past few hours and don't seem to be sure if the steps I've strayed away from the guides were correct, even if I should know by now because they didn't work.

After noticing it in this:

Recovering Catalyst Fixed Configuration Switches from a Corrupted or Missing Image

So now I think I may have recovered the switch.

Nope I got this again:

Proceed with reload? [confirm]

02:44:29: %SYS-5-RELOAD: Reload requested by console. Reload Reason: Reload Command.DUU

and I think that was the last thing I could try that seemed like a working solution.

I corrected the minicom setup as far as I could tell to use xmodem. However, I get the following when trying to transfer the image:

Welcome to minicom 2.7

OPTIONS: I18n
Compiled on Jan 1 2014, 17:13:19.
Port /dev/ttyUSB0, 00:34:53

Press CTRL-A Z for help on special keys

Unknown cmd:

switch: copy xmodem: flash:c3560-ipservicesk9-mz.122-46.SE.bin
Begin the Xmodem or Xmodem-1K transfer now...
CCCCCCCCCCxmodem:: I/O error

and when I to set baud I get the following and it locks up the switch:

switch: set BAUD 115200
S

Ok nevermind because your supposed to exist minicom by pressing ctrl-A then Q if started by using minicom -s or ctrl-A+Z then Q if started by using minicom -c on and then reenter minicom with the command minicom -b <baud rate>, which in my case the desired baud rate was 57600 because 9600 is to slow apparently and 115200 is to fast and using those speeds instead causes an I/O error. However, so does the speed at 57600 at the moment. Therefore it doesn't matter, which speed I choose and the only reason to use 57600 is that most have claim better success rates with it.

I have to resort to going back to xmodem anyway because tftp won't work, since the computer cannot ping the switch and the switch cannot ping the computer successfully. When I try to ping the computer from the switch in ROMMON it says Unknown command: ping and when I tried to ping the switch from the computer it says: Destination Host Unreachable. Therefore I'm not sure what to think other than if the switch has no ping command than it must not be able to accept or understand in coming ping or the icmp protocol and it definitely can't ping outside devices without it.

Basically I think my switch is a lost cause because I deleted the existing IOS, since I thought it was corrupt. When the only problem probably was that it wouldn't boot to it normally after a reload from recovering it in ROMMON considering it probably worked otherwise. I tried several times to boot normally though as you can see and if refused to do so and I should have waited until I got a response from someone who knew what I wasn't doing or wasn't seeing to do if it wasn't in the information I found. I'm aware that the undelete command can or could have saved the previous IOS image, but guess what when I try to use it the switch says: Unknown command: undelete and it's not in the help menu or shown after using ?.

I like Cisco too, but this is why it's so hard to get experience with their software and hardware. I know they don't want rouge equipement on their network or on the public network because it could cause disruption or interference in it, but I assure you I have no desire to do so and that's why my equipment is not connected to the internet. I just want a home lab, like I've seen so many other IT professionals do even if they don't follow the same eithics as I do, so I can

Anyway the following is what I needed to do and was missing in my process of recoverying from a corrupt or missing image before I delete the image from flashed and forced myself to have to resort using xmodem to restore a work alternate IOS image to the device:

Check the boot variable again to make sure it is set properly so that the switch boots up the correct system file on the next reboot. Issue the show bootvar command in order to do this.

Switch#show bootvar
BOOT variable = bootflash:cat4000-is-mz.121-11b.EW,1
CONFIG_FILE variable does not exist
BOOTLDR variable does not exist
Configuration register is 0x2102

Now as much as I don't like to admit this it appears as though I'm restoring the device with an alternate IOS image using Windows 10 and XtraPutty because I just couldn't get Ubuntu Linux to communicate with the switch using minicom.

Also, tftp wouldn't work because the switch couldn't ping the Computer and the Computer couldn't ping the switch, which probably was because the switch didn't have the ping command and kept saying: Unknown command: ping. The same goes the the undelete command too, which left me no way to undelete the original image as well as without tftp support because I needed to make an image of flash off the switch and perform forensics on it if I hoped to still possibly recover it.

Nevermind about this because this command or anything like it doesn't work on a 3560 unless you consider the show boot command, which does and I believe that's probably what they would have meant if that guide was made for that series of fixed configuration switches or anything like them related to this problem.

I finally got it recovered with an alternate image, but I had to delete corrupt configuration files and rename the IOS image files because for some reason it didn't say .bin at the end. Also I didn't do it for a CMS image because I must not have had one.
