Hey guys/gals,

I can't seem to get Crossfire mode enabled on my newly built system. I know I'm missing something. But I would love to have some help. This is a self built system.

AMD 64 3800+ X2
DFI Lanparty UT RDX200-CR Crossfire mobo
2gig DDR400
Zalman 120mm cpu cooler
a pair of Sapphire ATi X1600 XT 256mb PCIe's
240gig RAID 0 (two maxtor diamond9 120gig SATA)

Newest ATi 6.2 Cat drivers from ATi (downloaded today)

Do you have the ati chipset drivers installed. I'm not sure but do you need to enable Crossfire in the bios. Check bios and make sure you have the chipset drivers installed.

Yes, the ATi Southbridge drivers that were supplied on the mobo disk have been installed. I even went to DFI's website and DLed the newest mobo drivers from there just to make sure.

I have Both cards installed, they are recognized....and they work just fine. I even have Catalyst 6.2 installed. I have dual 17" monitors (both D-sub and DVI capable so I was able to check that both cards were working at the same time)

But, when I go into ATi Catalyst control panel, and go to the Crossfire tab, the "Enable Crossfire" check box is grayed out.

Dual Graphices have been enabled in the BIOS. and BIOS has been flashed to the most recent version from DFI's website.

The Sapphire X1600 XT's I ordered were OEM packaged. No manuals or instruction pertaining specifically to the X1600XT were included. Just the assortment of cables and Sapphire Driver CD.

I know there are those of you that know the solution to this or can point out if I'm missing someting. This is my first Crossfire build so I'm not familiar with what a 'normal and correct' install is suppose to look like.

I do know that the X1300's and X1600's require NO master card or Dongle cable to work in Crossfire mode. This information comes DIRECTLY from the ATi website section that discusses the X1300/X1600. I unfortunately cannot seem to find any install or FAQ support on the ATi website pertaining to the X1600's. All they talk about is either the X800/X850 Crossfires or their X1800/X1900's that do need a Dongle cable and Master cards.

hmm I know some ppl on xs have done xfire with 1600's, might want to check over there

XS? not familiar with them. Would you be so kind to point the way to them? :) Thanks.

Have you checked with a game or 3D Mark? They could be working  despite the option being greyed out.

Have you got the auxiliary power connector to the video cards that's on the motherboard connected? It's just below the PCIE slot closest to the cpu. It may need the extra juice to operate.

Also, only connect one monitor, as you can't use two or more monitors while in Crossfire mode.

All required power connections are connected. The Sapphire cards I have, do no have power connectors on the vid cards themselves. But, all mobo power connectors have been connected.

On thing I THINK I have figured out...but not sure since I'm at work currently and not at home in front of my machine...

I THINK I remember seeing the GENIE BIOS option under the Enable Dual Graphics Mode saying:

GFX0: 16x
GFX1: 12x

I bet I'll have to set them to both 8x?

 I'm gonna feel like an idiot if that's all it is to fix it.

Update:

The BIOS settings I had set for PCIe data rate was set to 16x for PCIe slot 1 and 12x for PCIe slot 2. THAT was my problem.

It needs to be set BOTH to 8x for Crossfire to enable. Had to read the fine print in the manual to verify.

T[H]anks all for letting me rant and pick my way through this. Having a place to rant and pick through the problem was a great help.

How does the X1600 crossfire perform, I can't seem to find any reviews on it.

my 3dmark score are on orb if you search by X1600 you can see what a crossfire setup does with 2 of them in 06 im the top 4 or 5 scores
