Okay, I have an odd BSOD and I'm hoping some of you can assist me. Here goes.

System is in my sig, totally unchanged from its original Dell configuration. It's been 100% rock solid since day one - never a single lockup or BSOD (really). I've been running the same drivers since 2005 and nothing has changed.

So I boot it up yesterday (Windows XP) and it blue screens before Windows loads. I reboot several times, same thing. I get a stop error: 00000007E, and sometimes other numbers.

I am able to boot into Safe Mode with no problems, but the machine will not boot into Windows in normal mode. I rescue my data, and figure it's time to reformat the machine anyway.

I reformat, it runs fine, and then it blue screens. This is again with my same drivers, the same configuration I've always run, and before patching. It just cannot be software.

Now last night it booted fine, and it's running fine today, but I need to find out what caused the BSODs. So, I ran 3dMark 06 for 8 passes, no issues and a great score. I ran Prime95 all night, no errors. I am running Memtest86+ now and so far, no errors.

Anyone have any ideas?

Make sure the inside of the case is free of any dust build up. Concentrate on the inside of the power supply, cpu fan and heat sink area and the video card fans.

After a good cleaning, make sure all the fans are spinning freely. And while your at it re-seat all your ide cables, sata cables, video cards and memory.

Providing there are no software conflicts or hardware failures, doing the above sometimes clears up problems on a pc such as your having.

I just did all of that - dusted (was not very dusty at all) and reseated all cards and cables. At first bootup (after running fine all day), it bluescreened again. I'm running Memtest again to check, but so far no errors.
