Hello,

Me and 9 friends are getting a house next year for college and I'm going to be in charge of setting it up for networking, but I haven't had experience connecting such a large number of users.

To stay on the safe side, I would like to be able to connect up to 24 users. I figure everyone gets 2 ports, plus a little extra.

But we want wireless as well as wired network access and I'm just not sure how to get this going.

Would it go something like this?

Internet->router->switch->everyone?

I'm not sure if what I'm asking is clear or not, so feel free to ask questions.

that will work.. internet (modem) -> router (wireless too probably) -> switch (gigabit if you have the $) -> wired computers

are you just going to run cables down the hallways and up stairs etc?
I am assuming this house in a rental college house and there would be no point in investing money in cabling. you probably should just get a nice wireless router and call it a day.. if someone doesn't have a wireless network adapter, they can get a cheap usb one for $10-$20 vs getting a 50+ foot Ethernet cable..

things may be different if you want an actual network, with shared storage and printers etc. or if you play games together that use a lot of bandwidth.. but for doing schoolwork, downloading music, and surfing porn you may be best all wireless..

maybe you should look into getting some kind of server that you can dump music and movies onto that can be accessed all over the house.

Ok thanks. I was just confused on the whole setup of what gets connected to what.

Wireless is definitely an option, but I'm not sure yet. With a 50ft ethernet cable avaiable for ~$6, it could go either way.

Thanks for the help!

What kind of budget do you have? How many SQ FT is the house? If it is a college rental house, you might be able to talk the owner into giving you a break on rent for the first month or two if you network the house properly. It doesn't cost much nor will it take that much time (9 people can get a lot done)
