My mom's friend was running an HP Pavillion with a P2 and an Asus Mobo. On start up there are 4 beeps, I looked it up and I think its a system timer error. So, I would have to send it in to get that fixed. I dont know if Asus would even fix a board that old. All he wants is to get his music and pictures off of the HDD.

I tried using the HDD in my rig, but the windows copy is locking it, it's Windows ME. I could get into safe mode, but I can't burn anything onto a CD because it won't recognize my burner. Any ideas? Thanks.

Ehhh, you could just copy all the data to your drive while in Safe mode, then reboot, and burn it from your drive. If you don't have space for all that, then perhaps you could surf for a bootable utility that can burn from the hard disk directly to CD/DVD. There are many ways to get at it, and tools like that. You can check the ultimate boot CD, but I don't recall if it has a tool for that, maybe not. One idea is that if the system is toast, and your mom's friend is going to get a new computer, then why not just stick the drive in an external USB drive carrier, and give it to them. Then when they get the new computer, they can just plug it in, and get the data.

I have found that using a linux live cd works on most machines with xp.....

Put her drive in your box on the secondary ide controller (probably where your cdrom is now) and boot your box normally with your regular hard drive. Go to windows explorer and browse her drive then copy her junk to your drive and burn it. This would be the easiest way.

Or buy this and do it usb. I think everyone needs one of these...

Right click on the folders on the drive in safe mode and its somewhere in properties or something, change the ownership of each of the folders and the whole drive to "you". Once that's done, boot up with windows then you can access the drive and copy the files or do whatever.
