Ok guys.. I have a weird problem here.. long story short. I took out stock heatsink*intel pc* and replaced it with the tuniq tower... but I cant screw it in due to the SB in its way... so I had to take it out and put back my stock HSF. After I did that I booted it up went into bios and made sure the temps were still in the 40-50 celcius range. But then It showed 86degrees celcius*ye s celcius not farenhiet* so I turned off the comp*psu off* and took down the stock HSF reapplied thermal paste*antec silver* then booted back up went into bios and still it shows 86 celcius. I did the same thing 4 times and made sure I only put allitle bit of thermal paste but still covering the whole cpu. Then I gave up and went to buy Arctic silver 5. But then Im still getting the same temp reading. So I was thinking that maybe that the cpu temp reading was damaged????? Also 86degrees celcius should be still ok to run since I heard the c2d can function well under 120 celcius.

PLEASE HELP :D

First of all I'm really curious as to how a southbridge heatsink would conflict with a cpu heatsink. :p Anyways, it could be poor contact between the heatsink and cpu from one of the pins not being properly secured, or it could be a problem with the temp sensor, or it could be a problem with your bios, or it could be a vast number of other things. But no, it would NOT be a good idea to run a C2D at 86C idle, as they tend to throttle at 85C. Not only can a C2D not "run well" at 120C, but it will shut itself down before that.

Thanks for answer :D.. what I meant is that the sb is blocking my way of screwing in the screws :p. Probably ill go buy a new HSF tommorrow or reapply/remount thermal paste. Also any suggestions on mounting the HSF? Ive re mounted it over 10 times and still havent found the best way.

with the tuniq tower you have to remove some stuff to get at it, like your psu and what not, then just tighten the screws slowly in a circular pattern so it is even. And you did follow arctic silver's directions for application on their website right?

um no :D mind linking me? :) and ill try again tommorrow and thanks for the answer :D

no my bad, follow the dual core directions then, i am just overwhelmed with the number of q6600 overclocking threads :)

the op's problem isnt caused by the arctic silver being applied incorrectly. to get 86C idle you could use peanut butter and get idle better temps. the op doesnt have the heatsink installed correctly.

thats what im thinking... man the intel HSF mounting suxs... sometimes i get it right sometimes I dont. so im thinking to go out and buy a new heatsink. anyways this morning I cleaned the top of my cpu with 99.9% rubbing alchohal re applied thermal paste*the dual core one* and put it on and made sure I couldnt move the heatsink and that it was good. Right now im getting 60degrees celcius which is better but not good enough.. Ill put back my intake fan *blowing to the cpu hsf* on the side of the case and see if that helps. Again thanks for all your help :)
