HELP something exploded

your hard drive won't boot into windows becasue it has XP on it... and you switched motherboards and hardware and all that out from under it... you can't do that... XP makes a unique id number based on the hardware and your registration key.. this basically keeps people from copying registered copies of XP onto a bunch of hard drives and sticking them into computers.. therefore bypassing that "activation" process..

I had a hard time finding the serial number on my Abit board too. As I recall there was one small sticker on the front and another little sticker on the backside of the board; each sticker had different numbers. They both looked like they could be the SN but only one of them was. When did you buy that board?

Your RMA request doesn't mean anything until you send them your credit card info and they put in the $150 hold. So try sending in a new request, or call them on the phone. The phone call will of course most likely involve a long hold before you talk to a person so set aside some time for that.

ok I repair-installed XP and I'm on this computer right now ;)

So my hard drive wasn't wrecked.


Just my motherboard so far, possibly the CPU but probably not, possible the ram but hopefully not.

This older mobo takes pc133 regular SDRAM my new mobo took DDR ram, so I can't test to see if that worked. My lan card and video card work.

It's working, but I don't think I'm going to be able to be playing any of my games though with 1.2ghz duron and only 384mb ram :(
 
also, when I booted it up and ran the activation wiz, It said my product key has been activiated too much. I had to freaking call microsoft and speak to this middle-eastern dude that I could barely understand...

I hope I don't have to do that again when I get my mobo back :(


Also on a side note: This time and even last time I got error messages during windows setup that I had to click OK on a million times, and now when I open the system properties I get this message:

But when I click on OK It goes to system properties. It's an annoyance more then a problem IMO.
 
I still haven't gotten anything back from Abit, are you sure I was supposed to reply to the e-mail they sent me?

Could I go ahead and fill out another RMA, or will they yell at me for doing 2?
