Help Silent My Home Server

So my home server is louder than I ever wanted it to be. It hasn't gotten any louder, but I want to try to change it. Currently it is a SuperMicro 4U box with some pretty loud fans in it.

I'm wondering would it be worth it to buy an enclosure or maybe I should make a closet in my office and vent it. I really want to do something about it, I can hear the damn thing in my living room.

Thanks for the advice all! I'll post more details later in the day.

It will be loud for a moment, then forever quiet.

Ontopic: use low-noise, slower RPM fans.

Also get the biggest fans that will fit. A larger, slower RPM fan is better than a smaller, higher RPM fan.

I would try running the included fans at 5V. That is what I did for my 3U case. I however had issues with HDD temperatures afterwards and ended up scrapping the build and going to a quieter chassis.

Still worth trying as it costs nothing. Just see what kind of temperatures you get.

What size fans are you running?

Try swapping to GELID NFB fans. Those are pretty much completely silent at high RPMs. I have 2 in my case running at 80% of max rpm, and no sound at all.

Stupid question, but what kind of usage are you putting on that server? I mean, if your using it as a rendering rig or something like that, I can understand the cooling dependent on the number of drives and what everyone said above is valid.

But, I'd like to know if you are treating the symptoms instead of the problem. If this thing is just serving up files and doing some batch downloading or other low CPU tasks, have you thought about replacing it instead?

I went from a rack of ten 1 TB drives to three 3 TB drives and swapped out the whole server portion to a plug computer. Basically, I did this: http://evercu.be/, just using larger drives. You could do similarly with about any plug computer and external drives. Heck, I've seen Roku boxes and Sony's whatevermajigit'scalled at Target and Pogoplugs at Best Buy that are easily modded and extended to be good fileservers + a few extra tools.

With my setup, the hard drives make more noise than the 1 fan and the temperatures are fine and power usage is damn low. The PC with the drives only sips around 15 watts average with most of that electricity going to spin the drives.
