[Help] Should be enough power, but it isn't?

I just bought a new XClio 450BL 450W PSU which is great so far with one exception: it emits a high pitched whine whenever the computer is turned on. Based on other threads I found in searches on the forums, it sounds like it's high load on the PSU that causes the problem.

Here's the catch though: I upgraded from an old Antec True430 PSU that has less wattage overall as well as less power on each rail and the Antec didn't whine. The Antec had a total of 26A on the +12v rail and the XClio has 15A and 17A respectively which is quite a bit more. Is it possible I'm overloading a single +12v rail and that's what's causing the problem?

As I understand it, the power supply should be more than enough for my particular system - I'm not overclocking at all. Specs are listed below and any and all help and suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Abit AV8 (s939)
  • AMD Athlon 64 3200+ @ 2.0GHz (stock)
  • Leadtek GeForce 6600GT (AGP 8x)
  • 2x512 Corsair pc3200
  • Seagate 7200.7 80gb SATA HDD (primary)
  • Western Digital 160gb IDE HDD (storage)
  • NEC DVD-RW drive
  • Asus DVD-ROM drive
  • Generic Floppy drive
  • 4x80mm case fan
  • 1x92mm HSF
  • PCI NIC

It depends on the level of whine. I've had a PSU that whined under load and it was loud enough to be heard over 2 water cooled PC's, the TV and the wall mount AC unit not 6 feet away from me. I'm sorry but that's just too much.

Now if it's just a subtle sound then it is fine but when the sound ends up being such an annoyance that you want to throw things at the PC there's a problem even if the PSU is still stable and works fine otherwise.

Just so you know, the whine is most likely being caused by a poorly potted transformer so that actually is faulty materials.
