Help setting up onboard raid 0

First time post.
I have 2 HDD's that I would like to set up in raid 0 off the X79 motherboard ports. When I set up my Win7-64 drive, I thought I added the raid drivers (maybe not though). The 2 drives I want to raid are not the boot drive. That is a separate drive. Here is what I did:
Booted into bios and set mode from AHCI to RAID.
Re-booted and hit control-I to set up the raid. I specified both drives and then rebooted.
At this point, it starts to boot, but when it gets to the screen with the four colors coming together, I get a BSOD for a half second.

Am I doing this correct? If not, what is wrong? I assume that the raid driver is not installed. If so, can I add it to a working Win7 system?

Exactly what board is this?

For starters, make sure that the drives are connected to the proper ports. Most boards have certain ports which are dedicated to onboard RAID.

My MB, Asus P9X79 has 8 SATA ports. Two are 6GB ports, and are the ones the raid drives are connected to. The MB also has 4 ports for 3GB and two are Marvel ports for either SSD caching or raid.

Are you saying that the only ports I can use for raid are the Marvel ports?

The BSOD is because of the drivers. You can do what you want with the intel controller, I wouldn't use anything else if there is a choice.

However the Marvell can help solve you problem. Go back to a working state, with the Marvell controller activated (should be by default). Stop the PC, put your system drive on the Marvell, boot to see if all is working. Stop it again, now you can change the Intel controller to RAID and do your thing, boot, and install the Intel RAID drivers. Then you can stop again, and put your system drive on a free intel port, it should boot without BSOD.

I might not have explained this correctly. I have 3 drives:
1 each 1TB drive on Intel 3GB port
2 each 2TB drives currently on Intel 6GB ports.

When I switch to Raid mode and hit CNTRL-I at next bootup, then try to boot into the 1TB drive, it gives BSOD. So, to boot up normally, I switch back to ACHI mode and I am then able to boot into the 1TB drive.

I also moved the 2 each 2TB drives to Marvel ports, I do not need change to raid mode in bios. That works just fine, but I would like to have the raid installed on the 6GB ports.

All that to say, that it sounds like I am lacking the raid drivers. Anybody know how to add them to a currently installed Windows 7-64 OS?

The reason you are getting the blue screen, is because you changed modes AFTER installing windows. That means windows needs a different driver than what is currently installed.

Easiest way to fix this would be to reinstall windows with raid turned ON, and you will need to install the driver for the raid during windows setup. It is possible to modify your current install to add the driver, but since this is a fresh clean install, this would be your easiest route.

EDIT: You can try botting up in ahci mode, and then using device manager to add the driver for the intel raid, but that method doesn't always work out so well.

You can usually install them from the CD that came with the motherboard, but as extide said, it's easier to do it during a fresh install and add the drivers when the setup prompts you.

best way to fix this :)

fresh install windows & load of the drivers.
