[Help] Server Build (WS 2008)

What I wanted to know was can I add more hard drives when I get it. The base system only comes with 250GB and I need at least 1TB but Dells upgrade to 1TB is really high ($300). If I could and I installed the program on the added hard drive would it make a difference then installing it on the hard drive with the OS on it? Would the X3034 CPU be enough.

You can easily add hard drives yourself. The T110 Chassis has room for 4 3.5" drives, so minus the pre-installed 250GB, you have room for 3 more. Installing on another hard drive will depend on the what hard drive you buy. A 7200RPM drive will generally be faster than the slower RPM green drives. The X3440 is a great processor, and should be fine.

Here's a quick snap of the inside. The top HDD slot will be filled, the 3 under it will be empty for you to toss in whatever you want.

X3430 or 3440 will be fine for you, difference is hyperthreading basically - I would probably pony up the extra 90 bucks for it though, especially on a webserver type app (the X3440)

I'd pick up 2 2TB drives and Raid-1 them for a little extra reliability.

Yeah I sent him a pm. You can add start you want but warranty will not be nbd. I see the post above didn't have Sas raid controller, you want that no onboard

Eh, if he needs 2-4TB of space not really much point in buying the add on SAS card? Software raid-1 would be more than sufficient.

I sell the T110 "First Server Bundle" at least once a month. All I do is add a second 250GB hard drive, and it comes out to $10xx. I use the SASiR6 to mirror the two pre-installed drives for the OS. Install two 2TB drives (usually, Hitachi, from Newegg) for the data volume, mirror them as well.

So for $12xx, you get a cute little chassis with a 3 year warranty, mirrored system and data volumes. Throw in a handful of external USB drives, enable the Windows Backup role, and you've got a great little server solution for a small shop!

Why would I need the external hd for back up when the drives are set to mirror each other? I'm not very familiar with raid so I could be missing something. Please explain.

Thanks

It's more of a question of what you are trying to backup for.

The Raid-1 will protect you from hardware failure - you are right, you don't need the external drive for that.

What you would do with the external drive is create an image of your system at different intervals in time (maybe a complete image, likely incrementals - depends on the backup software).
A typically policy might be
a) The last 5 days (so a new snapshot each day)
b) The last 4 weeks (A new snapshot each week)
c) A snapshot of the last 3 months (A new snapshot each month)

So at any given period of time (after the first 3 months) you would have 12 distinct snapshots - you could go back in time any day in the last 5 days, or to a single point in any week for the last for, or to a single point in any month for the last three.

Note that these are just numbers I pulled out, they may or may not be reasonable for you.

this protects you againt corruption of the system, which can come from viruses, updates, configuration changes, hacks, etc.

I would probably pick up a 2 external drives and keep a set of the backups offsite - all that together would be a pretty robust backup plan for not really too much money (you can use the built in windows backup to make the images).

Yeah I don't know why someone said you wouldn't want the Sas raid controller.

raid and the built in image backup is great.

The t110 is a nice entry server, I don't home build anything, if it was my biz id be using an oem

OS and Data Volume are mirroring each other. This is redundancy, not a backup. As is often said here, RAID is not a backup!

This particular bundle, that I commonly sell, I also sell with two external USB hard drives. Windows Backup is configured for a system image backup twice a day to the single USB hard drive. One is kept on site, one is kept off site. Rotate them out once a week (bring the one off-site into the office and plug-in for backups, take the on-site device off-site)

This way, you have the redundancy of mirroring for basic hardware failures, an on-site backup in case there is a system-wide failure, and an off-site backup in case the office burns down.
