Help Requested: X850 Pro AGP Issues.

Long time [H] Lurker here with a mighty conundrum on my hands right now that i can hope, someone can possibly help me resove, as i've spent about 30 hours of time in the past 4 days trying to get this sucker to work, and no luck

System specs are as followed

Barton 2800+ AMD processor
Asus A7N8X-la Motherboard
1GB Ram
160GB Maxtor 7200RPM Hard Drive
430w Antec Truepower Power Supply
SB Audigy2;
And my problem at the moment, My Radeon X850Pro AGP card

Basically, Anytime i load up a Graphical Application, or game, It'll run for anywhere between 1-5 minutes, My hard drive sounds like it studders, and my computer will hard lock on the screen that it was currently at about 10 seconds after the click, while looping about a 3 second clip of the sound it was playing.

So i think, defective/dying hard drive.

Load up a fresh copy of windows on another hard drive, as well as all the correct drivers and recent updates

Same Problem

Ok, so i load up a THIRD hard drive, and same problem.

Second and Third attempts were on a completely clean formatted windows install, with 2 diff versions of cata drivers, as well as omega drivers. Same problem with all 3

I've made sure my motherboard was updated. and all recent drivers were installed and running.

I can run windows in IE for days with the card in, and it will not lock up, but as soon as i load up a graphical program, its down in minutes.

My apologies if this was long and all over the place, as i have a hard time putting things into words where people can understand well, and i look forward to any help i can get to get this rig up and running, as running the integrated graphics is pure bleh right now :<

Comp is running at around 55C
Card is running around 70-ishC under load

Well, from your previous post it sounds like you eliminated the Hard Drive as being the issue. You also look like you've been pretty thorough with your video driver testing. So let me just throw a few things out there to try in no particular order. You probably already did a number of these things, but hope this helps.

Disable as many start-up apps as you can using msconfig, reboot and try running a few games. For me, Zone Alarm firewall has recently become a pain in the ass and prevents a few games from loading. Had to add game program file manually to Zone Alarm allowed apps.

Disable your sound card and see if problem goes away.

Leave the cover of your case off and see if problem goes away.

Update DirectX to current version.

Update your motherboards Chipset Drivers and most importantly the AGP Drivers. If no updates are available then re-intsall the chipset drivers.

Update your Audigy2 Drivers to the most recent version.
 
I believe that board is an Nforce 2 chipset. Try and use an older version of the chipset driver. I had to revert back a revision on my Nforce 3 aftter that everything worked perfectly.

Wow, we've got pretty similar systems. Have you run ATITool to test for artifacts? How long as this been happening? I'm guessing when you first built the system it was okay. What has changed in the meantime?

Definitely run CCleaner to clear some stuff from your hard drive. How full is your hard drive, by the way? I'd also run Memtest. If the RAM is faltering, I can see jolts and pauses happening.

I just woke up, so im going to be going through each and every one of these that i havent already done.

As for some of the questions. Minus 1 game, Memtest,Drivers, and a few other diagnostic softwares, my drive is completely fresh off of a format.

My intergrated chipset works fine, and a spare Geforce 2 MX card i have works flawlessly(as far as a geforce2mx card can work that is, haha) so it's not my AGP slot.

I've run driver cleaner to make sure there was no resonance of anything,

Memtest came up clean.
Sound Card drivers are the most recent, as are my Chipset and AGP drivers.

I don't know how old the card is exactly, but it was just opened a few weeks ago to put in my system, ATI brand, NIB. Wrapped and all. Bought it from a friend of mine because i really do not have the money at the moment to go over from AGP yet.


I have not run ATITool yet, as i didnt install it with the driver, i only installed the display driver from the website. i will do that soon.

It doesnt seem like a defective card, because i can run windows stable for days, until i load up anything DirectX related.

Is it at all possibly a 430 watt truepower isnt enough for it? i'm basically clueless when it comes to power supplies, their voltages, how to test, and if it's stable. However i'm only running 1 hard drive, No CD drive at the moment, just the bare minimum.

The only other thing i can think of is this card just simply wont work with this HP pulled PoS motherboard, but i havent been able to find anything to confirm that anywhere either.

Anyways, thanks for all your help and im gonna keep on trying.

Your PSU should be plenty of power. I'm running three hard drives, two optical drives, an X800 GTO, an Audigy 2 ZS, four case fans with a fan controller, and I'm fine on power.

ATITool doesn't install with the drivers. It's standalone and third-party. I'd run it and have it scan for artifacts. This won't necessarily help us figure out the cause, but it might pinpoint that it could be the video card.
 
your psu is fine, im running the same card as you overclocked, with... 300 watts of ultimate psu power. try underclocking the card real quick to make sure its not a heat issue?
 
Check the fan on the stock HSF.......I have an X800GTO that killed the stock fan in less than a year with no OC'ing.
 
I would agree about checking the fan. I have an X850pro AGP w/ unlocked pipelines. I have had it about a year. Ive kept the case clean and the vid card clean but recently the fan started making grinding noises. I don't know whether I'll just tough it out, buy an ATI silencer, or splurge for a new system or 1950XT.

I believe you have a very similar issue i had with my old X800XL AGP but i would encounter such problems anywhere in 2D mode and 3D mode. It would piss me off especially when i was flying a choppa in BF2, but anyway... here is my symptoms.

I had a nice P4 system, but X800XL AGP didnt like me that much. My screen would freeze for a second or two and than would go black it would then return to normal and would do the same thing again and again. After a lot of research i finely managed to find out what was the problem. it was the card + drivers especially Catalyst Control Center, mainly CLI.exe, what i did i got rid of it and only had driver installed, it solved half of the times i would get this glitchin...
Try to run a Task Manager in background and u will notice CLI.exe will be x20 x30 in your list thats why your hard drive stutters. In my case my pc would froze up for brief moments cuz of 50 processes of CLI.exe running. But like i said you might have a different issue anyway... try to uninstall CCC, or u know what... uninstall every ATI software from your comp, and then install the driver ONLY, install it manually too from Device Manager.

To me, it sounds like an issue with heat -- possibly the core or ram on the vid card. To verify, use powerstrip or ATITool to *underclock* your card by 100 mhz or so for both the mem and core. Try gaming on that for a bit, and see if you still have problems. If not, then it's definitely heat/temperature related.
