What Tool should i use to remove the IHS of my opty 146? I have here a dismantled Gillete Mach3, a stanley knife. And a rather sharp scalpel. Iv attempted a couple of times and wussed out cus the blade seems too thick. Even with the mach3 blade. the steel backplate the blade is mounted on doesnt allow it to go under the IHS. With the scalpel and stanley knife iv kinda been worried about pushing too hard. What Tools have you guys used to do this? How much force is needed to get blade under the IHS?

Get some straight good old double sided razors at walmart or kmart. Then put some tape on the end of the one side (so as not to cut yourself) and proceed.

Iv looked all over for them. The good old wilkinson sword slit your throat while shaving ones. They dont sell them very much over here anymore. I'm goin out to sell 2Gb of my Ram and my old 3200+ today. I'll have a look while im out there

Just get a regular razor blade like in the pic, jam it in the corners, then carefully go around. I can take an IHS off in under 5 minutes with no damage to SMDs, bent pins, or bloody fingers (did that once, ouch)

thanks for the picture. i got some of them blades today. £2.50 for 10. Not bad i guess. Shame i'll never use one to shave. But good to have around. will attempt at the unlidding tonight. At 1.55v 2.7G im gettin load temps at 55c with a big typhoon and a 100CFM fan over it. Surely sumthin aint right there!

I don't necessarily know the BEST way, but I used a utility knife like this one at Home Depot (search for utility knife, it's the most popular) to cut mine off. First I carefully cut the seal on all 4 corners, then I stood the chip on it's side and cut from corner to corner, being careful not to cut to deep.

it's easier to cut with a pointed tip blade than a square edge, imo... less metal between the layers of seal to cause friction.

does taking the ihs void warranty and what kind of temp drops could on expect? I read reviews saying the zalman 9500 is the best heatsink to use since it's light, but I don't feel comfortable putting it on because it seems to tighten super tight when you screw it in. haha

im contemplating getting an x2 4400. If i take the IHS off of that, do you basically treat it like the old athlons. Thats what I have right now, and the heatsink just goes right up against the core. Or.... do you reapply the thermal paste, clean it up and put the IHS back on? If I go for it, I will be cooling with a swiftech storm block.

Bolt the storm to the bare die. Unleash the power of the storm!

w00t... so theres nothing special about the new processors as compared to my old 2800 barton. It will be the same deal underneath, and I just set it up the same way, little drop of thermal paste in the middle, and carefully put the heatsink on?

Be extra careful not to go in too quickly. I chopped off a capacitor that way, even though mine still works and overclocks great. ^ Yep, thats the proper way.

Yeah that's how it's done!

IHS is goooonnnneeee. Temps are the saaaaammmmeeee! This sucks. Maybe my temp problem wasnt due to IHS.. Jus a hot mofo of a cpu. Got typhoon seated right. Checked twice. Thermal grease is nice and thin. 1.5v 2.6Ghz 55c loaded 'sigh'

no way is that right

you may have to shave down the lip of the socket...

Are you using the stock typhoon mount? Use 2 rods through stock mobo back plate then wing nuts to hold it down and mount it as tight as possible.

Am using the two H plates as they were already installed from my Bigwater venture. How tight can i tighten these things? I dont wanna crush my precious core. Got it at 1.58v now. 39 idle. Thats with 100CFM fan on BT. With a old 120mm sitting underneath acting as a shroud. innards removed of course and sides sealed

Meh, I had a tighter mount out on my test bed when I used mine. I got it down pretty tight because there wasnt any limits on how much space I had underneath (The screws were long, so they stuck out from the bottom plate). It got me a good 10C cooler than the stock mounts, and ill tell you, the stock mounts feel incredibly loose, and my temps suck. Mounting is key. Im gonna try to re-do this crap later. Good luck with yours :p

As mentioned before, I would strongly recommend shaving the edge of the socket. It is actually a hazard not to because it is possible that your heatsink is putting uneven stress on your core - namely on an edge or corner. This causes cracking and has happened before in the XS forums.

You can check to see if your socket "cam" is getting in the way by trying to stick a piece of paper between the highest part of the socket (this is the cam) and the heatsink. If you can slide it through without a problem, then you don't need to worry.

I sanded down my cam and it dropped my temperatures another 2C. I mostly did it so my waterblock didn't chip my core, though.

Just a kind suggestion :).

what do u mean by the socket cam? where on the socket are you on about? I think im gonna remove the foam pieces i put on the cpu cus they may be causing uneaven pressure and making me have to tighten it up more thn i should. Will check what ur on about when i kno what it is

the socket cam is the plastic part on the socket, it say LOTES or S939 on it, like when you put the CPU in, its the plastic thing facing towards the top of the motherboard on a DFI mobo.

The thing with lotes on it? You mean the standard bracket thats on all motherboards? that got removed when i installed the H plates provided by Thermaltake to install it.

nah, its the thing you put the chip in, the socket. like its plastic, you actually put the chip into it, when the chip is IHSless the core is lower then this piece and thus can cause bad mounting. ive seen pics before but i cant find em now.

which bit do i want to shave down? Is it the metal lever used to secure the cpu? I aint got nuthin that can shave down metal here.

i knew thats were id seen it before, its the article thats like "for those of you with non A64 system, stand up, that have non spring mounted coolers, stand up, and finally, those who still have their IHS's, please stand up"
