i'm trying to build a budget machine for someone as a gift...and i want to build in the option to upgrade the rig for gaming.

this asus barebones system caught my attention because it has integrated video:

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16856110055

compelling because it has integrated video (meaning my end-user can decide to buy a gaming card later); but i'm a relative noob myself when it comes to buying barebones systems and i've never had a nforce6150 board.

and the psu in there seems strange: only 300w, but 36 amps (total) on the +12v

can anyone tell whether the board and psu in that system would be adequate to run a decent current-gen video card and play current-gen games?

thanks in advance.

That system allows zilch upgradeability so here's a simple budget C2D system with quality parts:

motherboard: $100 Foxconn P9657AA-8KS2H
processor: $181.50 Intel C2D e6300
ram: $100 WINTEC AMPO 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
hdd: $58 Seagate Barracuda 160gb hard drive
Graphics card: $120($100 after mir) EVGA 7600GT 256mb
power supply: $55 XCLIO GOODPOWER 500W
Case: $45 Coolermaster Centurion
DVD Burner: $31 Samsung 18x DVD Burner

TOTAL= $690.50 ($670.50w/MIR)

That system is built with quality parts and the 7600gt should play any game with acceptable detail settings :)

thanks.

i'm restricted to $400 and it has to be a mini-atx tower. (not quite [H]ard, i realize)

so those boards with the 6100 or 6150 graphis onboard help me sneak in around my pricerange...allowing the person for whom i'm building it to buy a video card if wants to.

are there any solid 775 boards (for c2d) that have onboard video?

The Abit NF-m2nView is a good AM2 motherboard that can be upgraded to a video card at a later date. If you really want to save money, get the Biostar T force 939 mATX combined with the deeply discounted 939 processors. With regards to C2D motherboards, your best bet is to check out the Small Form Factor forum as many are debating this issue.

Good luck.

A Core2Duo gaming system for $400? Its possible, but not worth it. If you want good onboard video, you'll have to go with an AM2 build:

$100 - Wintec AMPO 1GB (2x512MB) DDR2-800 3AMD2800-1G1K-R
$89 - AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Orleans 2.2GHz Socket AM2
$75 - BIOSTAR TForce 6100 AM2 Socket AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Micro ATX
$45 - Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST380811AS 80GB 7200RPM SATA300 8MB Cache
$18 - LG Black DVD-ROM GDR-8164BK
=========
$328, leaving $72 for Case+PSU and Tax + Shipping

To save money, you could drop to 512MB of ram and save $50, but that wouldn't be a suggestion I could make. Be sure to get a quality PSU. Gaming is more GPU dependent than CPU, so the 6150 will game better than a 945G (intel; or even a G965 w/ X3000 onboard video).
