Ok, so I'm building my own computer for the first time. Everything seems to be connected correctly but I keep getting this error.

This happened the first time I booted it and I turned it off to check all the connections again. I switched some cables around and I still get the same thing.

I have a feeling I might not have the HDD and CD drive in the right order (slave/master/etc). I just don't know how to check.

This is what I'm using:
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Orleans Socket AM2 Processor
MSI K9N SLI Platinum Socket AM2 nForce 590 ATX Motherboard
XFX Geforce 7600GT 256MB PCI Express x16
Western Digital Caviar SE 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
OCZ Platinum 1GB DDR2 800

The CD drive is a beige IDE that I got from a yardsale with my case and 450watt PSU.

So, can anyone tell me what I need to check? I wish these error messages were more specific when telling me to "check cable."
 
I think your system might be trying to boot from the Network.

Check your boot settings in the BIOS and disable Network Boot if it's enabled.

Ok, I got into the BIOS but I don't see anything about network booting.

I changed the order of what it booted but it didn't make any difference.
It also showed me that everything is connected because everything shows up but I still don't get why it says to check a cable.
 
see if you can find anything in there that has to do with PXE bootup. It is also a possibility that your hard drive died and it is just using the network as the last resort boot up option.
 
try looking under the Integrated Peripherals category It usually called something like "LAN boot" or "Network boot" or something similar. I'm looking up your board to find out exactly where it is for you.
 
apparently there's an option to set Nvidia something or other as a boot device. I bet that's the network boot option your looking for. The manual was kinda garbled in that section so that's my best guess.

That was the first hit from google when I typed in your error so if you are sure your BIOS settings are all good then your hard disk might be bad. If you have another one around try that one instead.
 
I got it to work now. I disabled the NVIDIA Agent and now installing XP Pro.
Not sure if it's installing properly or not. It's been sitting at the "Setup is starting windows" screen for a while now. Almost 30 minutes. The usual blue bg is red for some reason too.

How long does it usually stay on that screen?
 
I've never seen a red background before. But when I got my SATA drive last week I noticed that it took almost 10 minutes to "Start Windows"
 
Well, it was blue at the beginning but when it gets to that stage it turns red. I rebooted and now it's at the red screen again. :(
