Heya fellas,

I need a little help. I was playing WOW the other day, not for long, maybe like an hour. And all of a sudden the screen went crazy...it looked like one of those magic eye things. I turned it off and on..nothing..and i even hit the reset button on the tower and the comp restarted but HOLY MOSES!!! the screen stayed the same.. So i powered off the computer and then it wouldnt turn back on. Well, it did. but the monitor wasnt getting any information. it just stayed black. And the USB ports didnt get read or anything.

I tried switching monitor....nothing.
My mobo doesnt have a video in so i can tjust bypass the videocard to see if its fried.
I tried resetting the BIOS..nothing.
Unplugged everytinhg and replugged...nothing.
Called it a piece of shizz....nothing.
I tried loading it up with my windows disk, going for a reformat...nothing.

After all these times the same thing would happen...The computer would turn on, fans gp, drives would spin, but the monitor isnt given any information and the USB drives are checked ( the lights on the keybord and mouse dont blink on startup like normal)

Im guessing my Mobo is dead, or my vid card is dead, or my processor is dead.

I dont know what to do anymore...

pleas hard forum...help:(
 
Nope doesnt go through POST, but check this out.
Last night, my girlfriend said "thatd be funny if it turned on" soi tried and BAM! it turned on and was working fine..then i restarted and it crapped out again. Sound like losse hardware maybe? blown capacitor?
 
originaly i would go PSU.... if you can get it back up again check your voltages... you could have a rail starting to go...
 
Are you really running it on the 61.77 drivers in your sig? If you can get it to boot again, definitely try updating the drivers. The 61.77s are ancient.
 
haha no i im using current drivers, justhavent updated my sig.

how would i check voltages? i cant get into a bios screen. do you mean go in there with a voltmeter?
 
ya a volt meter would work... alot of times if the pc isnt doing anything its your PSU... when it freaked out the first time and you shut it down did the power light flash?
 
i really dont remember if it flashed or not.

But i know that the PSU isnt completely burned cause some things power up. Could it just be delivering a lower voltage now?

Almost 100% that you fried your PS. Borrow one and put it in.... will only take 5 minutes to see.

your psu puts out many differnt voltages.... if even one of them isnt working a 100% nothing will happen.... you might get 12v so your drives will spin up but your mobo wont come up all the way
 
Could also be a short... if it is intermittent.

I would try re-seating you video card (older AGP vid card slots that didn't have a "lock" on the back had the nasty tendancy have the back of the card slip out).

Always check the easy things first before you go doing anything major.

I have seen this happen countless times... especially if their is tension on the monitor card.

He 'should' get a beep if his card isn't seated properly.

Is anything overclocked?? Video card or CPU??

I had the same thing happen to me in EQ2...screen would look exactly like you said...I had my 9800 Pro aggresively overclocked so I stepped it back like 5mhz on the GPU and 3 MHZ on the memory and I have been fine since.


Nevermind I see you can't even start up...sorry.

Yes indeed. You should be getting POST beeps once the motherboard and CPU are powered up and pass their own tests.

You would think, and that is quite logical.

I have had several instances where it will do nothing except spin fans. NO POST BEEPS. Taking the card all the way out makes it beep. :)

I also suppose it depends on card, motherboard and other factors (how far the card is in or out of the slot, etc.).
