I got a new PC and now I cannot get mine and my GF's PC to access the internet at the same time.

I have my two pcs, and linksys hub and a cable modem.

My GF's PC internet conection works fine if it is pluged directly into the modem or into the hub. My PC's internet conection works fine if its pluged straight into the modem - but not if its is pluged into the hub.

I have tried each port on the hub with her pc and it works fine, so thats not it.

So I am sure its not the cable either because it works fine when it is pluged into the modem.

My PC says "network cable is unpluged" when I plug it into the hub.

I am paying for two IPs, and it worked fine before I got my new PC. My 10/100 is integrated into the Gigabyte Nforce3 mobo.

Please help, I need my internet conection. :(
 
get rid of the hub and 1 ip address that your paying for. Go buy a router, be it linksys or belkin and plug that all in, run the setup cd, should get you in business. You can't split and internet connection without a router. And why are you paying for two ips?
 
*not* linksys... i have heard bad things about them... but my network card is belkin, and unlike my toshiba's built in model, it is not w0nky.
 
firstly, linksys rocks. now made by cisco their wired stuff is rock solid. Wireless is a little iffy, that's why I went with the belkin pre-n, thing is the best.
 
The linksys does work with my old PC, and still works for my GF's pc.

Actualy the "network cable is uppluged" is blinking now...Any help
 
what do you mean blinking? what's the current setup right now?
 
It will say conected - then network cable is unpluged - and change often.

I have my cable modem plugged into my hub, and both pc's pluged into the hub. One pc works - mine does not.
 
you still haven't done what I said, until then don't even bother trying anything else. You need a router. unless you're mistaken and you do have a router and not a hub. All a hub does is share the information, it does not assign IP's, which is what you need.
 
I do havea wireless linksys router too. let me get it out. this should take about 30 secs.
 
I'm also confused about why you're paying for two IP's. Do you have two modems or something?
 
do u have an internet where u have to log in? have the router log in then the router splits the connection
 
If you get a router, you don't need to pay for 2 IP's because the router will effectively be the only one with an IP in the eyes of the ISP. A router will split your internet connection and allow you to acces the internet simultaneously, using the same connection through the cable company. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
 
connect the router to the cable modem and the computers to the router...if you are running windows XP then go start>run> type cmd and after that opens type ipconfig /release and press "enter". once thats done type in ipconfig /renew and hit "enter". this will cause the servers at your ISP to recognize the router and you should have internet. this is what i have to do if i want to take my router to a friend's house for LAN parties so that my parent's computer will still have internet.

1. Unplug power to the cable modem
2. Plug the data cable from teh modem into the router's WAN port
3. Plug each computer into a different LAN port on the router
4. Plug power back into the cable modem, then when the lights have stopped their test pattern, plug power into the router and wait for its test to finished, usually takes 5 seconds.
5. On EACH machine, in the RUN command type CMD and hit ok
6. Type ipconfig /release then hit enter. When it says IP released successfully type in ipconfig /renew.

If your router is workign properly, both computers will have a new IP address instead of the COMCAST given IP that WILL NOT WORK reguardless of what router you have them plugged into. Steps 1 and 6 are CRITICAL. Comcast's modems have MAC address memory, meaning that they remember the last device plugged into them and store that information. If a new device is plugged in, it may not allow that device to connect properly.
What the Comcast guy told you would work, 6 months ago. A second IP and a hub is not going to work very well anymore with their newer network setup. You need a router for multiple computer access, bottom line.

That renews the IP address of the PC you're using. Unplugging power from the router and plugging it back in once it's plugged in resets the IP it pulls. You can also do this from the web interface on the router itself.
It has nothing to do with the servers on the ISP end, it has to do with what address the router (or computer) is using to talk to the device it's connected to. Basically, the computers can't talk to the router if the computers have an address that the router doesn't give out itself. The router can't talk to your ISP if it has an address that the ISP didn't give out.

I'd just like to mention how Linksys has the finest SOHO routers on the market today. :D
 
i have testimony from my second cousin once removed, who is the founder and owner of the isp that i use.

seems that she had a customer who wanted to be able to roam the house and still access the net. the customer already had bought the hardware, a dell comp and linksys router. she simply wanted them to set it up for her so it would work right.

seems when she got more than about 50ft. from the router the connection hit the toilet. it went all fritzy and w0nky. so she called the isp again, and when they switched her linksys router for their own (different brand) the problem dissappeared.

i have heard similar complaints from 1 or 2 other people on this very [H]ard|Forum that their linksys routers, etc. aren't working right.
