My cd-rom is not enabled or disabled - its just greyed out in the device manager profile. Now i cant load doom 3 :( this blows. I have uninstaled it and rebooted a few times, tried updating the drivers and rolling them back. Can anyone help please. :(

Does the tray open? Open up your case and make sure the IDE cable and power connector are correctly connected.

can you uninstall it? if so, do so... then reboot and let xp recognize it again...

If that doesn't work, then it's dead or not connected correctly.

Did you read his post?

Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Storage>Removable Storage>Libraries>Right-click drive>Properties>Enable Drive

Yes, the cd tray opens and even spins up. I have checked the cables and they are connected correctly. I have had this pc for two years and this is the first time this has happend or i have seen it. Nothing but the fact that i do not have the "Use this device (enable)" or "Do not use this device, diable" is greyd out under properties tab of my device manager. I have followed he steps above btw. My CD is not in the library - only my zip drive, i cant enable it. Is there anyway i can force this to let me enable it?

...have you tried a known good drive in the same location...?? A drive failure could explain what you are seeing.

Good Luck - B.B.S.

Have you installed any new chipset drivers, or any drivers for that matter? Almost sounds like this could be an ATAPI problem. Just a thought, i know how todo this in the registry as a trick, but has anyone been messing with or had access to your computer?
