Hi all,

I am not sure if I am posting this in the right place... but I have a problem with my new PC and I'm trying to figure out if it is the video card or the monitor or maybe neither that are causing the problem (so I am going to post this in both the video card and display forum).

I just built a new PC for the first time - AMD X2 4800+, 2GB RAM, 2x 160GB SATA Seagate HDs, X-Fi sound card, liteon optical drive, MSI K8N Diamond Plus motherboard, and evga 7900GTX 512MB RAM video card. I also got a ViewSonic VX2025wm monitor for it.

So I think everything is setup correctly, and I boot the computer for the first time. Everything is great, the lights go on, the fans are spinning (all of them), etc. But the monitor just says "no signal" and then goes black.

I try connecting it with DVI, D-SUB, both, everything. Not working. I call viewsonic support and they tell me that the monitor says no signal because no OS is isntalled and that I need to install the OS before I can use the monitor. So my question is... HOW can I do that? (I am on a laptop right now and don't happen to have an extra monitor laying around - like a CTR - to isntall the OS).

Could this maybe be a problem with my video card not working properly and not sending the signal? Or do you think it is more likely the monitor? And either way... what do you think I should do to try and solve this annoying/nasty problem.

Any help/advice is MUCH appreciated! Thank you. :)

You don't need an OS installed for your display to work - otherwise, installing an OS in and of itself would be impossible without network installs. I'm not sure what your problem is, but rest assured that isn't it.

As mentioned above, you do not need an OS to boot into the bios.

This happened to me recently, my fans an everything span up but the monitor said no signal, I switched to a better PSU and everything worked.

Remove all the 'extra' stuff, like the videocard, pci cards, dvdrom/diskette drives, the second hard drive etc, and use the on board video with 1 stick of ram only, and see if it works, you should be able to boot into the bios.

If it works then your PSU can't handle the load of all that, if not then I guess you may want to test with another monitor, try borrowing one.

reseat the videocard, if your videocard requires external power, make sure it is connected.

this problem could be caused by any peice of hardware in the case, do you have the speaker hooked up? listen for any beeps they can help get you in the right direction, take out everything but cpu, memory, and video card see if it boots to cmos then. Try to reset cmos.

You have some power-hungry hardware, so your psu might not be able to handle the load. What psu do you have? To test this, strip down everything except motherboard, cpu, video, and ram and try to see if you can get video that way. Also, if you have another, less power-consuming video card, hook that sucker up to at least test you're other components. If it works, then either you're 7900GTX is bad or you're psu can't handle your system, most likely the latter.

Just to reaffirm, the line that Viewsonic gave you about having to have the OS installed to get video is nonsense.
