Help Please, Wiring An 8' TFT

Hi guys im hoping you will be able to help me. Had a brain wave the other day about putting an 8' tft that i have got lying around into the front of an old pc case of mine (will be recorded in the work logs shortly).

The tft is powered using a cigarette lighter for in car purpose, i was wondering if it would at all be possible if i was to wire it up to the 12v supply from my pcs power supply?? The cable that i have here for it has got a regulator built in - input12-16v output 12v. Personally logically thinking about it that seems fine to me but i would like some advice from you people as im no electrician.

Should be fine. You could even bypass the regulator, as the 12V from a PC powersupply is regulated.
 
tom61 has it right--you'll be fine bypassing the regulator. Good luck with this!
 
ah cheers guys, im still modding the actual case at the moment filling in bits and bobs and gonna spray it up. Then i shall test this theory out :D keep an eye out for a worklog there will be one about shortly when i get chance.
 
hooking it straight up to the PSU is gonna draw a lot of power. I hope you have a big PSU.
 
Bah. I doubt the LCD draws more than an amp total, and most likely it uses just a fraction of that. Modern PSUs have quite a bit Amperage available on thier 12 Volt rails.

This old 250Watt At power supply I'm using as a bench power supply has a 10Amp 12Volt rail. If MrMelon has a decent power supply, it'll have 20Amps or more on each 12Volt rail, and possibly has more than one rail. There's usually a decent amount Amperage left over, even with a very beefy system, several times what the start-up power of the LCD's backlight and circuitry.
