I recently switched from Nvidia to ATI, (yes i used the driver cleaner to get rid on any remnants of Nvidias forceware) i was previously using the 6800 and switched to the X850xt. my benchmarks on 3d marks 01 recieved about a 2000 point boost, in spite of this most games including HL 2, quake 4, and COD2 recieve worse frames per second. this is especially noticable in quake 4, not only is it somewhat choppy, i also am not able to use the scope on the machinegun without incurring at least a 20 second "freeze". it is also to note that zooming in with any other gun such as the railgun i recieve no noticable frame drops. Please can someone tell me a possible solution to this problem, why am i seeing a downgrade in performance with a better card? The benchmarks are higher it is just that the games perform worse. "ATI sucks" is not a good response. so please if anyone has a suggestion.

OpenGL games will run a tad slower on ATI hardware (some newer cards are exempt from this thanks to a recent driver release?), but that doesn't explain HL2 running slower.

no way slower than a 6800 card plain...maybe a 6800ultra but not a 6800

actually it was a 6800 GT (the reason i got RMA'd it is because 8 pipes were masked and unmasking them gave me artifacts up the yin yang, but thats another story) but yeah there is no reason for the poor quality that i can see, but my real problem is quake 4, when i scope in with the machinegun my frames drop to zero for some time, in fact i thought i crashed at first, also note that the game only poops itself when scoping in with the machinegun and not any other guns.

Hrm... honestly, if youve got a spare drive laying around I would say to get a clean install and then take the new card for a test run. Ive had problems when swtiching between video cards like that and all it needed was a simple reformat. Its reasons like this that I have all of my important stuff on a seperate drive, formats being a hassle are a thing of the past.

ok i swiped my hard drive and started new, and guess what... still cannot scope the machinegun in quake 4. If anyone has any suggestions for this occurance that shouldnt happen please let me know.
