I ve never had an ATI card. I m planning a new build. Do I need an ATI based chipset MB in order to get the most out of the card????? I would think not but what the heck do I know.

A little advice on X-Fire would be appreciated too. Now I know I'd have to have an ATI based board for X-Fire, but the most stable one around would be a great help.

For a single card you can use any board you want. You are correct that you would need an ATi chipset for Crossfire; there are a few Intel 975X boards that support Crossfire if you are going Conroe.

However, you have not said what CPU you will be getting, so making any more specific recommendations isn't really possible.
 
Sorry......about the CPU, I really havent made up my mind yet.....Ive always used AMD and I ll probably do the same again......this Core2Duo craziness does seem tantilizing though..... I'm leaning towards a 4600 or 4800 X2 whichever supports the AM2 socket.
If I m not incorrect there do seem to be a few more X-Fire MBs in the AMD camp, no????

Well, yes and no. Yes there is a far larger selection of SLI and Crossfire boards on the AMD side, however, Crossfire supporting boards with AM2 support seem to be far and few between. All kinds of SLI AM2 boards, but at Newegg the only decent Crossfire AM2 is an ECS board. Not a bad board, but not what I would consider to building a high-end rig.
 
Bummer..... maybe......when that 1950XTX comes out, it will be good enough alone, when teamed up with an nVidia 590 chipset and AM2 CPU????
I am very curious about X-Fire, but it still doesnt seem to be quite as mature as SLI to invest in uncertain quality components.
