Firstly,
Windows XP Pro SP2
AMD 64 3000+
1024 DDR400 3200 Mushkin Memory
MSI K8T NEO FIS2R
Antec 450W w/ +5 @ 40A, +12 @ 20A, +3.3 @ 28A
Everything running at stock speeds..

I just installed a Gainward Golden Sample Geforce 6800GT. I was upgrading from a Geforce 4 Ti4600.

I ran driver cleaner 3.

Upon boot startup sequence I noticed that the text was garbled. When I got to the Windows XP startup I noticed that there are small 'squares' printed across the entire screen in a grid like fashion. These vary in color but on white they appear to be slightly purple/pink. These are very small squares.

At that point I already kind of figured I got a bum card :(

I installed the latest drivers from the NVIDIA website hoping that this would fix the issue. However, this is when the real problems seem to start. Right around the time the driver installation gets finished the screen flips to a black screen. The monitor does not lose signal however.

I've tried installing the drivers in safe mode as well, which completes the installation process but when I try and boot into regular windows just before it dumps me at the logon screen, it goes black.

So if anyone has any ideas, or if I should RMA the card please let me know! I'm hoping there is something simple I can do, like flash the card bios. Please note, I am unable to see what my BIOS settings are set to as its all garbled junk.

well you seemed to have covered all the bases...there isn't much left to try...personally I would try it in a friends computer...if that don't fly...RMA...

Just to add a little more information. I've got the card hooked up to a molex connector on it's own line, and I'm fairly certain both the card and the molex are connected properly.

I'm going to reboot and reinsert the card to make sure.

Well, went through and made sure everything was fine. Still same problem. Just reinstalled the Geforce 4 ti4600 and everything seems fine, so I know its not my agp slot thats bad.

UGH. This is just a pain because now I'll probably have to wait another 3 or 4 weeks just for them to get more cards in stock to replace mine.

I had the same issue with my BFG 6800GT OC. My very first time I put it in, my POST and every other screen into Windows was barbled. Even in WinXP it was. I too thought the drivers would fix it, at least it being messed up in WinXP. It didnt, it also went black like yours did. I sat there for about 5 minutes, waiting and dis/re-connecting the DVI. Nothing. I reset it, and tried it again, after deleting the partion driver install. Again on bootup it was barbled. This time the drivers went thru, and when I rebooted, the POST screen was still screwed up, but in WinXP it was fine. After a few more reboots (over the course of the day) my POST screen was fine, and so was WinXP.

I have no idea why it did it, it was a little annoying, but it "worked it self out", or whatever. I know my PSU is up to par, its a PC Power&Cooling 510 ATX Deluxe. It hasnt done it since, but I am still a little leary about it.

I had that EXACT same problem.

Had to RMA it.

Blue pixels on black background, yellow on white.

Such dissapointment. Gonna beat doom 3 before I get my 6800.

Here's what I was running on

Athlon 64 3400
MSI Neo Platinum
1 gig Crucial DDR400
Audigy 2 ZS
Enermax 480Watt Coolergiant
Previous ATi 9600 xt to eVGA 6800 gt

I had the problem where after I installed the 61.77 drivers my screen would go black but still have a signal. In fact, I had dual monitors and it would eventually do this after each reboot. So annoying. I fixed that problem by installing the latest Omega drivers. It also worked fine with the lastest beta 65.xx ForceWare drivers.

No idea about the garbled text and small squares though. Goodluck.

Mine did that when I pushed the referesh rate past the monitors abilities.
check DxDiag
someone else here solved their Ultra issues(same stuff) by using 64 AGP aperture
Try this:

1 remove drivers through control panel
2 reboot into safe mode
3 cancel "found new hardware"
4 Run Driver Cleaner 3
skip to 7 if new card is in
5 shut down
6 install new card
7 reboot
8 cancel "found new hardware"
9 install new drivers
10 may have to install monitor drivers
11 run coolbits
12 setup vid card through prop page
13 start fraggin!

I get this problem with my old TI 4600 from time to time when something wants to run at 800x600. Whenever I go into the menu in BF1942, I get a screwed up wavey screen but the play screen is just fine.

Good point. I often forget to go through the BIOS when installing a new vid card.
