Hey guys, I'm new :D. Any ways, I need your expert advice on what display(s) to buy for the computer I'm building as I'm on a laptop atm and don't really know which monitors are good. I'm looking at two options. Either I buy 1 big 30" monitor or I buy 2 19"-24" monitors as I have always liked dual monitor setups. They are meant to double up as my computer display and a tv. Which option do you reccommend and what monitors to fulfill that option? They should widescreen, have 1:1 pixel mapping, and have fast response time for computer gaming as that is what I will mostly be doing. With regards to the dual monitor set up, one monitor can be geared for pc gaming and normal pc usage and the other for HD console gaming and watching hdtv, but the same monitor or same resolution would be prefered. I'm looking to spend no more than about 1500 total. Sorry for being so picky, but thanks for all your help!

check this thread (if you have the guts to go trough 94pages) http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1066372 all your options are mentioned in it pratically.. of course the thread is about the BenQ FP241W which is an awesome display, and with the new firmware update as 1:1, but the new firmware isn't available right now.. still need a month.. maybe...

Ok, so I think I settled down with getting one 24" monitor, but I don't know which one. These are the ones I've liked so far:
Samsung 244T
EIZO CE240W
EIZO S240W
HP LP2465
Gateway FPD2485W
Acer AL2423Wdr
BenQ FP241VW
Dell 3007

Which ones do you guys reccommend for general computer use, fast paced pc gaming, and hd console gaming + hdtv? The hdmi port isn't an issue since I can get a dvi to hdmi adapter.

If you've got a $1500 budget, save some and just get a 37" Westy? OR you could get the 42..

Thing is, this is gonna serve mainly and a pc monitor with everything else second. I don't think I could see a screen that big a foot or two away lol. Anyways, 1500 for a 37" monitor seems like the monitor doesn't have really good quality for gaming, which is what I'll mostly be doing.

I'm in the same situation. I don't want anything too big,at least nothing over 1920x1200.

I have spent the last 3 weeks agonizing over my decision.

Dell 30 or Westy 37

Just bought the Westy this AM. $1397 shipped, including 3 year ext warranty , and the Monstor DVI. I am happy for now. Of course we'll have to see when it arrives, but buygig.com does have a 15 day money back guarantee!

the Westy native res is 1920x1080. the Dell is 2560x1600. For me, I want to be able to sit back 2-3 feet, instead of have to lean in to read chat text while raiding in EQ. The Westy's res , I think, will accommodate that a little better, but not be grainy ( pixel-ated )

Add to that the Westy has 6 HD inputs...HDMI, 2x DVI, etc.. my gut told me that in the end I will be more satisfied with the Westy, as long as it's sharp and something to be proud display quality wise.

I am a system admin by day. I do alot of desktop support too, on top of netadmin duttes, etc on one of the world's largest domains ( the Dept of Veteran's Affairs ) Sooo many times, even basic laptop displays natively ressed make fonts, icon's, etc...too small for people, and they have to change from native res which makes it look crappy. I am afraid the Dell has that sorta feel; yes, more pixels make for a sweeter picture, but also strain the eyes more in function. Function > fashion imo. I'm almost 45, and wear bi-focals now :(

Of course, I'll report back in once I have it up and running!

As has been posted so many times in so many threads, I really wish I could set them both up side by side and see for myself, but alas, this is hard to accomplish, and thats what makes the real posts by real people here and other sites, so helpful!

How well does the BenQ FP241W perform on fast paced gaming? And Which version would you guys reccommend among the 3 versions, Non Z revised, Z, or VW?

dont buy a westy.... Even if the screen looks good, the spec looks good, the overall quality isn't there. Input problem, dead pixel, everything. Of course you can buy one that's gonna be good, but stories of people having to return it 3 times in one year to get one decent aren't rare at all.

The Z version isn't yet available(in canada at least) it has a new technology that adds a black frame after every frame, so you're suppose to get a better picture(no one here has actually tried it..). The WV version is for console gamers mainly, it looks like a tv, but it's the screen than the W. The FP241W from what you can read in the other thread is a GREAT monitor, except if i were you i would wait so the firmware update that enables 1:1 aspect ratio is available in monitor you buy(so you don't has to send it to BenQ to be updated...). The only problem i've heard till now for th W is sometimes you'll get a blackscreen for a second than after back to normal, and it's simply fixed by changing the DVI cable.

The Westinghouse monitors (37" or 42") have a 8ms response time vs. the BenQ's 16ms (but 6ms grey-to-grey). In action games, the Westys should be better. The contrast ratio is the same. Overall I'd go with a larger monitor, but that's just me.

if you are standing a foot away a 37inch is just TOO big and bad since you'll see pixels..

I think a lot of times people want the 30ish sized monitors for the big effect and to do TV type things on them. I think the money for the 30" should just go to a TV right from jump street. A good 20 - 24" inch S-IPS monitor with good pitch is a better thing to sit directly in front of. A big secondary monitor is nice if it isn't just a glorified TV. I Myself like the 2 monitor scheme since it allows for differnt angles and views. I would rather have 2 high quality sedans or sport cars than one big SUV monitor. I will probably get a second NEC 20WMGX2 or the bigger NEC when it comes out.
