help pick RAM for 2P build.

That will work. For folding, you do not need the 4gb sticks. Just make sure you get enough for quad channel (4 sets).

I'm currently running this in my 4p g34 system. It has been flashed to run at 1333mhz CL7. I did not see any performance increase when i made the switch from 1333 CL8 to 1333 CL7 (after the flash).

As brother firedfly said, it'll work but I believe overkill for folding. You don't need that much memory to justify 8GB sets. Just go with 4 2x2GB sets and you'll be set.

Thanks for the help guys!

I wish BD didn't fall on its face, i was expecting a flood of cheap magny coars :(

We'll have to see how BD does in multiproc situations folding and such. It may still be a good upgrade over the magny.

Do you guys know if full coverage of the HS on these cpus is important? I think I can mount up a few xspc rasas without any modding but I would have to mount them with a diamond shape over the cpu not a square.

R-type and I are using Cooler Master Hyper 212+'s on our MC chips. The heat sink only covers the middle of the processor and keeps temps nice and cool. We have not seen any issues from the heat sink only covering the middle of the processor.

You can find more info on his setup in this thread.

MMM i want to make love to that build lol. The rasas are cheap and I already own one so i guess ill give them a shot.

Thanks again.

alright I know I'm getting way of topic from my OP but don't want to start 100 threads and annoy every one lol.

Is it possible to use a software solution like this to OC since you can't overclock in the bios?
http://phoronix.com/forums/showthre...ndervolt-overclock-AMD-K8L-and-K10-processors.

Those are awesome TJ. I'm pretty poor right now. Once I commit to buying the setup and sell off some bitcoin hardware I may shoot you a pm.

A deal just sort of fell in my lap on the G34 gear and i'm going to be hard pressed for money for the next few weeks.

IL isn't out yet ... so yall don't know how the arch handles the server side of apps yet... that said... well we will get back to you on how they perform ;P

As far as TPC Turion Power Control... it is great for overclocking...but only for unlocked chips (read ES) I use it on my 4p.

As long as you have room for your hsf, any of the ripjaw series memory will be fine. You don't need the taller heatsinks on the memory, though. I just use Kingston 1333 ValuRAM on my 4ps and have not had any issues. Also, if this is just a folding box, 8 x 1GB would be fine as well - even if it is not just a folding box, 8GB of memory is still quite a bit.

For what it's worth, he's buying that 2P rig from me, since I've had it offline for a month due to 1.) a lack of time) and 2.) some automotive issues that need the cash. Just wanted to get that out in the open. :)

QQ i'm sure i cant afford the extra spicys

its not the affording part thats the problem, its the finding part that is which is why they tend to be expensive when you do find them. AMD doesn't release that many ES chips where as Intel releases an ass load of them and floods the market so they are easy to find.

Ha! That explains a lot... I was wondering why he was linking to my original thread.

Like everybody said, I wouldn't recommend spending TONS of money on something lower than CAS8, but I do recommend getting at least DDR3-1333 CAS8, or DDR3-1600 CAS9 (to be flashed down to CAS8).

Let me know if you have any issues with the system or if you need any help configuring/installing it.

BTW, Congrats!

I'm not leaving folding, just letting that particular rig go. I expect to have some machines up and running by this weekend. I just found a buddy who will let me leech his electricity, so game on!

Thanks for all the support guys. I'm sure I'll have questions getting this rig setup. I'm not very good with Linux.
