Im currently running a p4 3.4@3.9Ghz/1MB/HT/900mhz FSB with 1024mb pc3200 and abit radeon x800xt, on an abit ic7-g maxII. My 3dmark05 score is about 4500. Shouldnt I be able to get a considerably higher score with these specs? CPU idles around 40-42C and does about 55 max load. Vid card has an ATI silencer 4, and both have AS5, so temp is not the issue. Could it be my drivers? Im currently using 6.14.10.6497. Also, I tried omega drivers to oc the vid card and they make everything very slow. ATI tool doesnt really seem to work with my system either, even with a small overclock, I freeze up during games. So, I've been using stock frequencies. Pleaseee help me out here!! I'm seeing people with lesser specs and more 3dmarks :confused:
 
Try running Prime95 and see if you can run that for a few hours w/o any errors. Just because an overclock is running in windows doesn't mean it's not miscalculating things ;)

Edit: Actually, for a P4 w/ HT you have to run 2 instances of Prime95 actually. So fire up 2 of those.
 
Google is ur friend ;) Google Prime95 and you'll find it

Prime95 puts a full load on ur CPU and does some sort of calculations to make sure your CPU is making the correct math (2+2=4, right? not 5 :p). I can run my 3400+ claw @ 2.4GHz stock voltage in windows with no real problems, but Prime says "no no, your CPU is a dirty liar" and I had to bump my voltage to 1.6v to get it working. Just fire up Prime95 (in your case, 2 of them) and run it as torture test, with Small FFT's (it's the top option, says it checks only the CPU and it's cache).

Hmm. What kind of power supply are you running? That could be causing some issues with the videocard overclock...sadly im an nvidia guy so I can't help too much with the videocard ;)
 
Yeah, I'd presume that to be a good PSU. Just see what Prime95 says, and if it errors out, you have to add voltage more than likely...just keep an eye on your temps.
 
OK, i just finished running Prime95.

Self-tests 8k and 10k passed, and on the final test of the 12 testing, i received this error:

FATAL ERROR: Final result was 0A2E2DA4, expected: 788520D0.
Hardward failure detected.
Torture test ran 47 minutes, 1 errors, 0 warnings.


So, what exactly does that mean? should i try upping my cpu voltage? what is a safe voltage for my setup? Im currently reading about 1.30-1.36V.
 
More than likely you need to either slow down your CPU, or up your CPU's voltage. As for what's safe, that's more of an opinion. If you're on stock cooling, not much I don't think. Keep an eye on your temps and bump your voltage one spot from wherever it is stock. Try that out, and if you still error, probably need another bump. Overclocking is best done small steps.
 
Ok, I have very good air flow in my case. I have a Zalman 7000CU on my cpu, ATI silencer 4 on my vid card, along with 2 90mm fans, 2 80mm fans, and a big 120mm in the back. Since im using an ic7-g, is it safe to assume the temps are actually read 8-10C higher than they really are? Thats what ive been hearing, im just a little sceptical because i dont want to screw anything up
 
There's no real way to tell unless people have posted having the exact same setup as you, using their own thermal diode on the CPU to get the real temp, and have shown it to be terribly inaccurate. I play it safe and assume my temps are correct even tho people say they are reported warm. Better safe than sorry :p
 
Well, I ended up having to lower my speed to about 3750 and up my voltage a bit, but now the stability is there:

Torture test ran for 4 Hours, 4 minutes - 0 errors, 0 messages. :p

Thanks again for your help! I currently have the comp running stable at 3.8Ghz, and i also managed to overclock my vpu a bit, producing a new score of 5660. I dont know if ill be able to achieve anything higher until I switch to water cooling. Oh well, its fine for now! :p
