Ive encountered an issue that Ive became very frustrated with and I cant seem to identify the problem myself. Ive fixed lot of systems in my days but this one is beyond me and I would appreciate some help. The problem has spread to two systems, PSU and video card are the common components, and its driving me nuts.
Main PC:
AMD 3800x2
Abit KN8 Ultra
G.Skill 2GB ddr-500 HZ
EVGA 7900GT CO SC
Antec 550w EPS 36a@12v
Maxtor Diamondmax 10 250GB SATA 16MB Cache
CM Stacker Case
I had the pc running flawless for months with a 7800GT CO and I Stepped Up to a 7900GT CO SC. Everything was fine for about a month then the system would randomly lose signal and display monitor self test. The system would appear to be running but no monitor output and a total loss of the front panel. The only way to turn it off was to flip the switch on the PSU.
This started happening every once in awhile but eventualy became more and more frequent, eventualy it happened each time the system booted. I tried removing my OC, testing other PSUs (forton 450w), and anything else I could find. Nothing I did stopped the problem so I assumed it was a problamatic 7900 and went through an RMA.
The RMA arrived but I still had the same issues. I put the card and Forton PSU into my second computer and had no problems. I assumed the Abit KN8 Ultra was going out but Im not so sure now.
Second PC:
Intel Pentium D 820
Asus P5LD2-VM
PNY 2GB DDR2-667
Forton 450w PSU Dual 18a@12v
Hitachi 7k250 SATA
EVGA 7900GT CO SC
Antec NSK2400
I played Prey all the way through and put quite a few hours into Titan Quest without an issue. I didnt put it through alot of benching, Ive been to busy this summer, but it seemed to work without a hitch for over a month.
Tonight, I finaly got the time to get the Abit around for RMA. While removing it I decided to give it one last test before it went back. I sat a box on top of my Intel pc and used its Forton PSU,dvd drive, and front panel. I placed the 7900 into the Abit and it took off just fine. I could get into the bios and boot from a cd without an issue. I decided to hook up the Maxtor HD and it displayed the windows loading splash screen but then went into self test.
I tried booting into safe mode but it also just displays the monitor self test. I said screw it its getting RMA'd. I broke the system down and hooked the Intel system back up.
Well low and behold, my Intel system now shows the monitor self test right after it gets to the windows loading screen. It also shows it when going into safe mode, identical to the other pc. The Intel board has intergrated graphics and it will boot just fine when hooked up to that.
My intel system is a modded case Ive been working on constantly so Ive removed the card 20+ time in the past month. Why is it now having issues after 10 minutes in the Abit board? Cooling is not an issue and I have checked my connections/mounting of the card numerous times.
I dont understand whats going on at all. Evga wasnt any help and Ive got no ideas as to where to look. Is there something in my main pc causing this problem or is it just the card? Im thinking it maybe some sort of a power issue with the abit board but Im dont know much about power. I do have spare parts to test but I dont want to try them without some sort of an idea on the problem, parts are expensive and not under warranty. Ive had my main pc down since like May and Id like to get it back running asap. Thanks
