HELP Overclocking 580 using MSI Afterburner

Core Clock: 797Mhz (vs. 772Mhz reference)
Shader Clock: 1594 MHz (vs. 1544 MHz reference)

I'm probably going to shell out the extra 100$ and get the 3GB card. That means ill have to do the overclocking myself, so i have a few questions:

- Will the overclock be a noticeable difference? If no, what Mhz should i push for?
- Is overclocking using MSI Afterburner as simple as moving the little slider to the right?
- Do i need to bump up the voltage? how much?

Depends how far you push it - under about 5% overclock, probably not.
Yes, it is as easy as moving a slider and clicking Apply
Depends on how much you overclock - you'll have to set something, check stability, and the up the voltage if it isn't stable

1. Rarely - if you get a big overclock you might notice the difference slightly.
2. Yes.
3. Depends how far you push it.

What resolution are you using? The 3GB version isn't necessary for everyone.

1080x1920 at the moment, but this card is to hopefully future-proof me for the next 3 years and pick up another for SLI when the price goes down.

im pretty sure it can handle most anything at this resolution

3 GB is serious overkill at 1080p (really anything less than multi-monitor resolutions) - you could save $100 by going with the just as fast 1.5GB Lightning card.

I'd love 2 cards over 1, but ATI has done me wrong in the past.
Plus, Nvidia's single GPU cards are pulling numbers greater than ATI's dual GPU cards. And this way i can use my old gtx280 in SLI for physx.

Bulletstorm - more than twice the speed

F1 2010 - almost twice the speed

Civ 5 - 52% faster

Bad Company 2 - 70% faster

Plenty of other evidence out there. $600 for a single GTX580 is a colossal waste of money, imo.

i was speaking in terms of single card. i didn't realize you meant running 2 vs 1.

I dont know how accurate those reports are, as my single 280 pulls 60fps in bad company 2 with everything on high. but thats at 1080 res

anyways, for an extra 100$ i probably should have gone with this option.
perhaps i can sell the 580 to a friend when the 600 series comes out next spring.

you compared two SINGLE GPU CARDS running in crossfire, to a single GPU card.
i was originally speaking in terms of a single gpu card, vs a single card with 2 gpus on board.

Well then look at an HD6990 instead of the pair of HD6970s. You will notice it performs almost identically. The only sort of person who would make such remarks about 4chan is someone who doesn't know what 4chan is.
