Help on purchasing hardrive

Hey guys I'm interested in purchasing either a 300 gb or 500 gb hardive. It hased to have Sata. I've narrowed it down to 3 hardrives, the 300 gb maxtor Diamondmax 10, the 500 gb Hitachi Deskstar 7K500, and the 500 gb maxtor Diamondmax 11.I am most interested in the maxtor Diamondmax 11 but cant find any stores that sell this particular hardrive. Anyone know where I can purchase one? is it out yet and if it's not availabe yet anyone know when it will be available for purchase becuase I do see it on the maxtor website. I also need an enclosure for these hardrives. Would any sata enclosure work with these hardrives or do each of these hardrives need a specific enclosure? I also need an Sata l to Sata ll cable. would this one do the trick? cause its the only one that I could find. Please help me, thanks alot stu
 
I don't believe the diamondmax11's are on the market yet, so you'd have to wait or settle for something else.

Any sata enclosure should work, but a good one though with an active cooling fan.

You can use sata one cables on sata II drives without any effect right now. Worst case your burst speed is limited to 150 MB/s. No drive can sustain even above ata100 rates yet. I've got a new sata II drive running on my wifes system without any issues at all. Save yourself the money right now and don't worry about converters.

Douglite would have a better idea on this, but aren't sata 1 and sata II cables electronically the exact same thing?

They aren't. There might be some marketing gimmicks out there with "SATA-II" cables being priced higher htan SATA cables, but the fact is that any SATA cable (at least the ones I've seen) will work perfectly at 3gbps.
 
Thanks for the responses. Actually I think that I need an eSata to Sata cable. What is the difference between the two? Sorry but I'm a bit of a newb with hardrive terminology. What cables do I need to hook the hardrive up to the enclosure? ok which 500 gb Sata hardrive should I purchase. the Seagate Barracuda 500 gb or the Hitachi's Deskstar 7K500, or any others that I should consider?

eSata is external SATA. You don't need this unless you're going outside your case.

Thank you. actually I'm going to be hooking it up to my explorer 8300 hd cable box so I can record more movies.

update. Ok I've narrowed it down to 3 Sata hardrives. The 500 gb Seagate Barracuda, The Hitachi Deskstar 7K500, or the 500 gb Maxtor Diamondmax 11, when it's available. Which of these is the best 500 gb hardrive? Any others that you guys can recommend that I might have missed. I'm willing to spend up to $380. Thanks Stu

I have a predilection for Hitatchi, so I'd probably buy that one.

To decide between the two drives, you can go to http://www.storagereview.com/ and look for benchmarks, or search the web for reviews. Or you can just compare the data sheets from the manufactuers' websites, looking for something that makes the one drive win over the other. Then, go back and compare price -- is the win worth the price?
