Help on deciding which speakers

Hi, i have been reading round the forums for a while now and decided to drop my old Logitech-z2300 for something better. I listen to a wide arrange of music (leaning a bit more torwards experimental classical and trance) properly ripped from original cds and encoded at least v0 Vbr for mp3s to flac.

Rokit 5 or 6 G2
Swan m200MkII
Audioengine A5
M-Audio Av-40

But don't limit yourself to these choices, I am very opened to other brands as well.

I'm also considering getting a reciever and getting two passive speakers such as Elements, but i don't really plan on spending any more in the future. So what is most appropriate with my budget of around 200-350$ and desk space is not an issue.I'm currently using a auzentech x-fi prelude on my computer at the moment.

I was also wondering if I'm ruining my z-2300 satellite by connecting them to a modded ipod where the volume limit has been raised significantly. They sound just as loud as powered speakers, but they become fairly distorted when the highs and lows kick in at the same time. I use a bandpass filter, although even the mids seems a bit stressed.

About the Logitech, if anything you're probably ruining the ipod if anything. z-2300 aren't particularly great speakers anyway.

I would say go for the m200mkii's or the audioengines. I have a pair of the swans and they're really nice after break-in with a good sound card. I use a Asus Xonar and I have a bunch of custom EQ's for different situations that come in handy.

The KRK Rokit 6 hands down. Wish I had a chance to audition them before I bought my M200MKII's, they are the only ones that I like better.

Mind describing how they are better? How are the bass in particular. What parts stands out.

There are a ton of people who love Swans M200 line, and a ton who love KRK's Rokit line. You can't base one being better then the other just on what some random person says. Speakers are some of the most subjective things there is.

You are going to have to audition some monitors on your own to make a decision. Go to a Guitar Center or a large music shop like it. They usually have a bunch of monitors set up.

That is true, but there are certain parts of each speakers that one can point out. Thats what i'm looking for. Unfortunately the guitar center in my area Sam Ash, do not carry swan or Audio engine so i have to make for whats best.

There are audiophiles out there who have experimented with much more audio equipment then me in the past and have a better understanding of what to look for, I tend to trust their judgment over my own. Hence why some people think Creative's I-spire or Logitech's z series are praised so high by many, where if they invested a bit more. They would probably get something of better quality.

M-Audio AV40 is great but if you have a bigger price range which clearly you do, you should spring for the m200's or KRK's

How are the do the Krks handle with Party/ technoish music.I'm aware studio monitors are meant to reproduce sounds accurately, but thats where DSP comes in right. Am i taking the right approach here?

There are also discussions about studio monitors are more suited for musicians and technicians for "mastering" purposes because of their neutral nature. However, arn't all of the songs your hearing mastered so you are hearing what is suppose to be heard?

monitor speakers are not pleasant to listen to. they are created so you can hear every “fault” in the music, which as a normal listener you don’t want to hear! also, they don’t look nice, not a mac look at all. i suggest getting a soundcard with optical out, connect it to an amplifier that supports optical, and get some decent hifi speakers. my favorite are the monitor-audio R90(dont let the brand name put you off ;p) http://www.monitoraudio.co.uk/products/radius/r90/your-speaker. they are quite small for hifi speakers, and available in different colors. (198×125×140, 2kg). perhaps even put a small subwoofer under your desk to balance it out.

well am using the krk rp6g2 and i listen to a bit of techno and trance and i find the bass not to overpowering but just right for me they also have 3 types of connectors on the monitor so u get that the freedom in what cable u want to use to hook them up with plus you can also add a sub later on if u wanted even more bass

another good set to look at would be the fostex set that guitar center have which comes with 2 monitors and sub fostex studio monitor

Those speakers seems fantastic although I currently have my eyes fixed on those rp6g2, where (first or second generation) someone on this forum is offering them for a very reasonable price.

Are we getting toasted because of the threads age? Its a bit tough finding threads with the Rokits and I didn't want to create a new one if one already existed.
