Hi all! Newbie here doing my first PC build. I've been using a Macbook Pro for the last few years but decided I want to switch over to a cheaper PC option.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Looking to run Windows 7 or 8 for some light computing. Photoshop, web browsing, maybe some light gaming, and basic media center functions. Microsoft Office. If possible, I would just like to do everything that I could do on a 2011 Macbook Pro.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$650 (including tax)

3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.
Los Angeles, CA

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
Basically all the hardware needed to run a PC. I am not reusing any parts. I need CPU, motherboard, RAM, case, PSU, etc.

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
None

6) Will you be overclocking?
No

7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?
1680x1050 22inch
I also have access to larger sized monitors (1920x1080p, 24inch) that I might consider using. These are not included in the budget.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
ASAP

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support?USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc.
USB3.0

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
Windows 7, 64bit

Side note:
I am also interested in a smaller form factor case that would be very discreet in my room, if possible. Would I be able to build something like this in an HTPC case? I've been looking at something like SilverStone's Milo series (ML03, ML04, ML05, etc).

APU - AMD A8-6600K - $104
Mobo - ASRock FM2A88X-ITX+ - $105
- comes with wireless N, 6x SATA III

RAM:
Kingston HyperX Blu 1x8GB 1600 MHz CL9 1.5V - $55
OR
G.SKILL Ares 2x4 GB 1866 MHz CL9 1.5V - $71 with 10% off code expiring at end of day today
-- The 2nd option will restrict you from upgrading memory capacity in the future but I don't think your usage will require more than 5 or 6GB of RAM. I recommend this option because it allows dual channel operation and 1866 MHz is the sweet spot for APU video performance/price ratio.

SSD - Samsung 840 Evo 120GB - $83
HDD - Western Digital WD10EZEX 1TB - $60
ODD - current cheapest - $15 with code expiring today

PSU - may depend on case; for a very small mITX case...
Silverstone ST30SF 300W SFX - $69

Case - we're at $507 at this point, so there is some good wiggle room.
Here are my picks, I'm skipping a lot of the common suggestions because I don't think they look discreet enough. mITX should have more emphasis on aesthetics, imo. Note that the Lian Li's have no cable management and relatively poor airflow but are all aluminum and easy to move around. As long as you're not doing any real gaming, I don't see a problem with the airflow (I'm pretty biased toward LL)
Cooler Master N200 - $50
Lian Li PC-Q07B - $50
Silverstone SG06BB - $56
Lian Li PC-Q27B - $75
Rosewill Legacy U2-S - $97 (this is a Jonsbro rebrand, pretty nice LL alternative if you don't need an optical drive)

edit:
You can also squeeze in one of these HSFs for the mITX chassis.
Noctua NH-L9A - $42

rastaban and Dangman recently helped me build a rig somewhat similar to yours. I put it all together the other day and it came out great. Kudos to these guys, they help out a lot of folks on the forum here. :D

I used a Samsung 250gb SSD, and already I am wishing I had put in a bigger one. So my recommendation would be to bump up to a 250gb SSD rather than the 120gb.

Good luck with your build. ;)
