Help! Old Computer needs hard drive replaced

So I've recently aquired my parents old computer for my room. I plan to learn how to use Linux or something like that with this computer. Except the Hard Drive is so old and slow and loud that I want to replace it.

The computer is a VPR Matrix, and the Hard drive is a Western Digital Caviar WD600. What hard drive is safe for this system for me to use?
 
That disk is plenty for any linux distro, why dont you zero fill that bad boy and load your favorite *nix version?

Yeah I know but this one is old... and annoying... It is very loud and slow. deteriorated. :(
 
if you want to replace it, its your money not ours :p but pretty much any linux distro (unless you put every single app and rpm on it) will fit on a 6gb drive.
 
well you dont seem to understand. The hard drive is uncomfortably loud so its annoying to even turn the thing on as is whines and grinds all the time. I just need to know what hard drive will work in an older system!
 
Check the connection of the drive, I'm sure it's going to be IDE and that's what you need to buy. If it's a flat wide ribbon cable then it's most likely an IDE drive.

It doesn't matter what drive you specifically buy as long as it's IDE, however I'd say you should try to find one as cheap as you can, possibly used, since you're just using it to screw around with.
