I have a two-year old Dell with an 850 chipset. I'm wanting to overclock a new Northwood 2.4 I just got. Yet when I get into bios, there's none of the options needed to overclock. What can I do? Bios update - if so where can I download it? Third-party software? Hardware?

Thanks for the help.

your best shot would probably be just a new motherboard thats good for overclocking... im not sure about the updating of the BIOS to enable overclocking but if it works, let me know

i think you can try to find clockgen somewhere on the web. i never had to use it so i can't really help you find it

www.cpuid.com

it also has cpu-z which is very good for checking your clock speed

get a new board!

i have 2 ic7-max3's and before i sold my 2.4c i had it up to 3.6ghz [300fsb]with ht on

If it's not avaliable in the BIOS, then chances are %99.9999 that it doesn't have a locked AGP/PCI bus speed. I tried this with my old motherboard, changing the FSB through CPUFSB, and it crashed after a few hours, causing data corruption and making me lose every file on my whole hard drive.

I would strongly advice you against doing this without good data backups. PCI/AGP bus's don't like running at anything except for default speeds...

I say get a new mobo if you want to overclock.

Just my two cents :p

If you end up getting a new motherboard, you will also have to get a new case and power supply because Dell uses proprietary hardware (Correct me if I am wrong.)

true... i was helping my friend with his dell the other day... it sucks because their heatsinks can only fit dell motherboards and vice versa, their motherboards only fit their cases and vice versa, and so on

thats why a lotta computer enthusiasts hate dells

although their computer support is decent
