Hi,

I want to upgrade my trusty 19" Samsung Syncmaster 191T display.
I'm looking for a 24" display, no speakers, height adjustable.
At work I just got a 24" Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP. It seems like a nice display. However, out of the box the colors seemed rather strange (blue). I keep reading that only "special" applications (something with color) are compatible with this display - is this true?

What other display should I look at in this price range? anything from Samsung or NEC?

Well, the HP is H-IPS while the Dell is S-PVA. That's a big advantage in image quality. It also has less input lag, not by much but enough to make a difference.

So, does everyone here get the HP?

How will the HP look color wise out of the box? Will it also just work with some specific applications as apparently the Dell?

Many places.
Amazon - $580
eBay - ~$530
Buy.com - $570
Provantage - $517

Not so good. You have 2 options here:
1. Use the color/contrast/brightness settings from TFTCentral along with their ICC profile.
2. Buy a good hardware colorimeter and calibrate the monitor.

Will it also just work with some specific applications as apparently the Dell?

What exactly are you asking?

Well, I found comments like this:
http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitor...7-32886455-1.html?tag=userReviews;summaryList

"First, the wide color gamut is basically incompatible with Internet Explorer! (and any other non-color managed applications!) Most images on the web and in most other applications use the standard sRGB color profile"

Not sure if this is true or not. Like I said, I just got this monitor in the office, and I'm struggling as well to setup the colors correctly. Maybe I just didn't figure out some settings yet. It seems that for standard office usage you wouldn't need a color calibration device.

So my question is: will the HP be similar?

I think you should avoid the HP display and any other display marketed as "large gamut" unless you are doing a great deal of color work... color work meaning more than just touching up some blemishes in Photoshop, but extending to ICC match screen to callibrated printer, verifying Pantone swatch accuracy in Indesign, etc.

These displays really do require that you know what you're doing, and none of them seem to ship with "sRGB" modes that work properly.

HP LP2475w is wide gamut, thus you shall use it only in colour aware applications - Firefox 3 web browser, Photoshop etc.
In games and videos green and red will be over-saturated. Or are there any multimedia players with colour profiles support?

What do you want the monitor for? If you have a lot of money to spare, NEC 2490 is a way to go.

I'm looking for a general purpose home monitor of good quality (no games or movies - lots of work - some home picture and video). So, I think wide gamut monitors are not for me. Ont he other hand I want to look at the price. I can have the Dell for $450.- (with a 10% coupon that I have).

It seems on the Samsung line we have:
- 245T - similar price as the Dell. Is this a wide gamut?
- I found that the Samsung 2493HM can be had for below $300.-. Not sure if I would be disappointed? It seems from reviews that the display performs near the same.

Nec:
- the 2490 seems nice, but I'm looking to stay around $500.- or below.
- the next down the line seems to be the 24WMCX - couldn't find much info about it.

HP:
- HP LP2475w seems out as it is a wide gamut
- the next down the line appears to be w2408 - couldn't find much info about it.

If you're going to be doing a lot of picture and video work, then I'm pretty sure wide gamut IS the way to go:

In games and videos green and red will be over-saturated.

So in picture/video editors, I'm assuming it should be just great (if they're colour aware like Photoshop). And since you're not gaming or watching videos, you have no reason to worry about the oversaturation. :)

As for the 2493HM and the w2408, stay away from them. They won't be good for you because they're TN panels (see Display forum stickie for more info on panel types)

So, if price is also a factor, am I back to the Dell 2408WFP?

Still a little bit confused about the 2493HM. Reviews and users seem to like it...

Dell 2408WFP, HP LP2475W, Samsung 245T are all wide gamut.

If you are willing to try 22", the Dell 2209WA is eIPS (basically the same as H-IPS) and that is a good Standard Gamut display, and can be had for as little as $212.00 U.S. according to the respective thread.

Otherwise LG will be releasing the 2420P which is a standard sRGB gamut 24" some time this summer, and it should be in the $500.00 range or less if you are willing to wait

Unfortuanly, I can't really wait with the purchase and I was hoping to got at least 24".
So, it sounds like form all I learned so far that I should not purchase a wide gamut monitor?
But it sounds like there is nothing else out there that is recommended? i.e. monitors like 2493HM,...?
