I need help to choose a 19" LCD.

It has to fulfill these basic needs:

- price: US$ 250 or less;
- build and overall quality;
- image quality (it will be used for internet, photo editing and treatment, 3D modeling, animation and texturing, digital painting, and casual gaming, in this order)

Also, I have a thing to consider: it will be bought at USA and brought as carry-on baggage to be used in Brazil. So, the display (and preferably its box too) needs to fit on air companies' size limitations for carry-on baggage.

(besides... can a 20.1" widescreen monitor be transported as carry-on baggage? Does it fit the size limitations? Anyway, I guess I wouldn't be able to play at 1680x1050 because of my VGA - a 6800GS, so I'll focus on a 19" display)

I guess some people will tell me to buy a Viewera 19" P-MVA display, and it looks good to me, but, I'm a little affraid of buying from an unknown manufacturer. In the other hand, if anyone here has their displays and has anything to say about them, and how long they last... I would like to know 'cause they have a very good price and nice specs.

I tend to buy some Viewsonic. I don't know if I can buy a P-MVA display with that money, from VS or other manufacturer. Is there any? If not, I'll buy a TN display and try to get used to it...

Before you say "why don't buy in Brazil?", here the cheaper and most basic TN 19" display costs US$ 400. I have the opportunity to buy at USA, I wanna save my money to spend on another things!!!

Hope you guys can help me...

Acer AL1923R will fit the bill as well as any for your requirements.

if you end up settling for a TN Panel, then check out the samsung 940BW or 940BW (not sure if there is any difference between models). I have the 940BW and absolutely love it.

Why settle with 16.2 color display and 160 degree view? The AL1923R creams the 940BW.

I am not syaing this is the best panel in the world, but his price range makes it difficult to get an s-ips which is preferable. With his range, i was jsut suggesting a good lcd that is easy to locate at brick and mortor stores. I have never seen a non TN lcd under 250 at brick and mortor stores which i think he is prolly looking for if he is coming to the states.

BadDog the AL1923R seems fine to me! The only problem is that it's hard to find it at online stores... only found at 2 stores, at one it was out of stock, on the other, it was pricey... well I'll do more research. But thanks for the good tip!

freakycody I will buy the LCD online, to be delivered at a friend's house. I think the 940BW is a good choice too, I was thinking about some Viewsonic too, I know they have a 19" 5:4 p-mva display, just don't know the model or price.

For me, I've decided that if I can't buy a p-mva or s-ips display, I'll have to get used to a TN anyway. In that case, I just want some that is adjustable and good (as possible), 'cause I used a LG L1740B for some days and I tried to calibrate it to match a lab's color target and it was painful and useless, just couldn't reach the colors I wanted.

Thanks for the help until now and if you have more suggestions, please let me know!

Is there any chance to get a good online deal on Thanksgiving? I ask 'cause I may buy it at the end of november (my friend comes from US at december).

I saw this at eBay but it's refurbished...

DO you know any other sites which have it?

I found at Amazon for $276, and at Superwharehouse but it was out of stock...

I just bought an Acer AL1916W. I printed the price from tiger direct and due to the pain of RMA'ing from online dealers I just got Bestbuy to price match it.Turns out it was a good idea, I ended up getting two with dead pixels, after returning my second and getting a third, 3 hours of driving back and forth to best buy, i got one without a dead pixel. After all of this pain... I do like the monitor :p. There is no ghosting it is 5ms, the brightness is intense i turned it down to 50% and its still almost too bright for me, dual input, vga/dvi, there is a slight backlight bleed at the top and bottom, but hardly noticable only when black screen. This one is 19" W and has a max res of 1440x900. I use it for gaming and it performs awesome.

I was able to order from Amazon just now, brand new in stock with RitzCamera:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000E9BXH6/ref=dp_olp_2/102-1582724-9406514

The trick is to order from Amazon, use Add to cart because sometimes the seller doesn't list the item on his site and can only be ordered thru Amazon.

I picked up the ViewSonic VX1935wm for one of my systems at Costco for $199.00.

Fantastic display for the price.

5ms response
700:1 contrast
1440 x 900 75Hz res (gotta go up one size for larger resolution)

Truely a fantastic bargin if you ask me for a nice 19" WM display.

This is interesting, specialy 'cause Ritz has a store near the place where my fellow at US lives, maybe this can be useful in case of returning the monitor for an example. The only problem is that I would buy more stuff (photographic paper and other stuff) and if I buy this monitor, I won't have money to buy other things, in the other hand, it's possible to get avery good monitor with more image quality...

I was thinking about buying this... I just have to check with my friend if he's a Costco member... the price of this display is very good!

Seanmounce how that's display image quality? Primarily I thought about buying a 19" WS display, but I was a little affraid of their color quality and if their size isn't so big at all... a friend told me they have the same height of a 17" and only larger on width. Is it true?

Another question, about the AL1923R: does it come with a DVI cable?

(I didn't buy my display yet, I'll wait for Thanksgiving :) and I'm still trying to choose the best display for my needs and, for my budget)

Yesterday I went to a store and they had a 19" widescreen display close to a regular 19" aaand, I found the 19" wide too small compared w/the 5:4, simply didn't like it. I guess I'll try to get a 5:4 display.

So I still have the question if the mentioned Acer comes with the DVI cable... 'cause if yes, I'll stay with this one!

And, I was doing some research at flatpanels.dk and realized that there are a lot of 19" displays with good P-MVA panels, but they are all sold in Europe, just one or another model is sold in US... strange... can't figure it out why don't they sell these displays on US market...

(ah and I forgot to mention but I wanna apologize for my bad English)
