Help needed on 6600GT system (pics)

Ok, here is the problem. I just built a new rig with:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+
DFI Lanparty UT Ultra-D nForce 4
1GB (512x2) TwinMOS SP PC 3200 Ram
MSI 6600GT 128MB DDR
160GB Western Digital SE (raid 0)
Thermalright XP-120 HSF

and other optical drives and stuff.

So I load Windows and get all my drivers installed just fine. For fun, I want to fire up Rome: Total War and see how it looks. So I get that installed and start playing the prologue. About 15 minutes into the game, I get a BSOD saying something like nvid_driv and stuff. So I reboot and the the troubles begin. Here are some pictures of typical things my computer does now.

Some times it is really bad like in the pictures and it will get to the window's splash and then not ever get any further. The screen just goes black and nothing happens. When the "artifacting" is less, then it usually boots into windows but everything looks like crap.

As you can see, something isn't right. My first inclination was that it was a video driver issue. So I grabbed the latest drivers and the same things kept happening. Rolled back to original, same. So now I'm down to the video card and motherboard I think.

I am going to RMA my video card tomorrow, so if someone can give me some advice as to what exactly is going on, that would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like it's almost certainly a hardware problem on your video card, probably completely broken VRAM.
 
If it was your motherboard's graphics port, (AGP or PCI-e), then you would more than likely have no picture at all no matter what or you would get a vga error message during POST. Since that is not occurring and you are getting heavy artifacting it has to be the video card. I would highly recommend you RMA the card at once. To be sure though you can obviously test the card in another system or test another card in this system.
 
i had that problem with my ati for awhile. RMA'd the card 3 times and it wasn't the card. It was my PSU :X

check your powersupply!
 
yes your video card is damaged
same thing happen to me 3 times, for not paying attention, not careful enough.
video card was a evga geforce 6800 ultra pcie.

Just had to point out the ease of damaging the highspeed components we use today. RMA that board as the card has been damaged, could have been that way when shipped, just be extra carefull when installing.

We all tend to slack when we don't suffer static issues in 3 out of 4 builds.

dfi recommends highly that you use at power supply of at least 480 watts and native 24pin power cord. NO ADAPTER :confused:
 
and ... a clean power supply lead to the card that is not shared with other devices (or split) might help.
 
I'm going to guess the PSU is some "550 watt" generic tiawan unit that came with the case, likely putting out a solid buck fifty at max.
 
150 if running at 20C. 550 if at -20C. :rolleyes:

Generic power supplies are such a terrible gimmick to sell a case it's frightening.
 
dude, i had the EXACT same problem.....and guess what was wrong with it...

the RAM sticks were not in dual channel configuration....despite them being in slots 1 and 3.
Then i found out that on my Abit AN8, the slots for dual channel were 1 and 2 (same color), so i cahnged them and everything has been fine since..

i know its sounds supid, but make sure your DIMMs are in the SAME COLOR slots....

anyway man, i feel for ya...i went through the same thing

I'm thinking power supply (not enough clean power) or a faulty card also. I'd test it until you've had enough though, since my original 9700 pro exhibited something like this and it turned out the card just wasn't liking the power supply. I initially thought it was dead. Worked great!
 
I have a brand new Antec TruePower 2.0 430W power supply. I have the 24-pin connector as well as the other 3 power connectors the board requires.
 
Also, I have my RAM in slots 2 & 4 which I believe is correct for dual channel on this mobo.
 
I'd say its the card then, that's a fine PSU. Good luck with the RMA :cool:
 
I have a BGT 6800 Ultra OC water block.

Was playing T2, and my machine locked up. Then I go to reboot, and see the same kind of screens as above. I have an Antec 480w PSU, so I think it's the card.
Just got an RMA from BFG and I'm sending it back. The card has been great for 6 months, but now it just died. What a bummer, I hope they can fix it, because they don't make the water block version any more.

Now I'm wondering if 6 months of OCing killed the card, or if it just wore out. I'll probably never know.

The carpet is my workstation when it comes to building computers...been doing that for 10 years, and only once lost a video card. I just make sure to be bare foot (shoes insulate and build up static), and make sure the PC case has the power cord plugged in so it has a ground. Then I just periodically touch the case as I'm working in it.

Oh plus I make sure to handle the PCB (cards) by the edges and handle drives by only touching the casing.

Definently looks like bad video card, the video card I popped looked just like that...I think it was a Guilemot Maxi Gamer or some brand like that.
 
EXACT same thing happend to me this moring.. ive been waiting on my new mobo and psu to get here :rolleyes: i hope my mobo works so i can sell it

Isn't it dangerous to keep the power cord plugged? Are you saying you keep it plugged to the wall socket as well? I've read in places that there's still current inside the machine when the cord is plugged to the wall socket although the power is switched off!

I thought that OCing any more than the speeds it came at would void the warranty.
 
man, i returned my card 2 times after the 3rd chance i damaged my card again, i felt sorry for newegg and a bit ashamed, return the card for a refund and i bought a stupid 6200 tc. stupied decision i ever made.
 
I had a similar error on my screen before, and luckily i had a simple solution, jus took out the card and reset it again... probably one of the connectors wasnt flush with the mb connectors or something....
