First of all. Hi guys, this is my first post, I've been watching these forums for awhile and finally I've had the courage to make an account.

Ok, exams over, I have been saving some $$ and I have 2000-2500 $ to spend.

I want you guys to help me decide what I can get ( or wait for.. ) with this kind of money.
No fanboy-ism pls, just the best of the buck pls.

Any help would be appreciated. I want a comp builded from scratch. case ( looks over performance ) cpu, etc...

Thx in advance

Uses? gaming, if yes then what games? interested in dx10? We shoulden't have to ask for this info.

Welcome to the [H],

Q6600
8800GTX
2gb Brand Ram
Corsair 620
Gigabyte DS3.

But we could help more if we knew what the PC would be used for.

master noran, with $2500 DX10 is a must and your attitude is hardly helping.

Wow... that sure was a friendly way to greet a new poster.... pretty shitty in my opinion, but.....

RoBo listed some pretty decent gear there.. cases, well that's kind of hard to say, as personal preference is a pretty big part of case selection... but I personally like looks (and performance) of the Stacker 830... spendy but solid, and has flat kick ass cooling... So yeah, that would be my choice, but that's just me.

Good luck and have fun!

It doesn't hurt to know precisely or even generally what type of use this machine would be geared towards. I will admit the second post there was a bit blunt, but geez, back off kids. :D

It's obvious to most anyone that if you're interested in best bang for the buck these days, AMD is simply not an option anymore, it's Intel Core 2 Duo or even better the Core 2 Quad or nothing at all. Most people around here will probably say wait for the price cuts near the end of this month (scheduled to go into effect on the 22nd but they might start early or late, no way to know till it happens), and go for the Q6600 Core 2 Quad processor for $266 estimated cost.

As for the rest, well, Geezus H. Christ it's an infinite variety of stuff you could do with $2500. I could build a quad core box with 8GB of RAM and a kickass monster video card setup and 4TB of hard drive space at this point, but that would be boring. :D

You'll get tons of comments and suggestions in this thread, that much is for certain. Get the stuff that appeals to you, and don't necessarily base purchases on reviews (they're usually useless, actually), or the wily dreaded beast known as "the fanboy" that simply refuses to believe that a specific component might not be "the best" in any given situation and preaches it like it's the second coming.

Have fun with the experience, and remember the most important part of all of this isn't ending up with a kickass machine, it's learning how to build one from scratch in the first place.

Hope this helps...

I want to thank everyone who helped me so far.
Indeed I forgot to specify my comp's uses, and those are gaming, some multitasking , net surf , movies.
I've been absent in the hardware world, so i'm not quite in touch with the latest news, but from what i've seen: intel is back on it's horse with the core 2, ram is ddr2 ( right ? ) , and nvidia still holds the crown.

Thanks for all the advices , I want to add that I want a good case ( noise over cooling, but it has to have good cooling performance -> has to be pretty :D ) , a good stable and rich in futures mother board ( I'm not too much into overclocking ), a good processor ( good overclocker ), some fast ram or how should i put it? and for graphics , a good overclockable unit ( to mention that I 'm not going SLi what so ever ), a good PSU ( not too strong, just enough for the specified pieces ) .....and I'm on air not interested in watercooling.

THx in advance and sorry for any grammar mistakes , i'm romanian

correct answer:
Welcome to the [H],
Q6600
8800GTX
2gb Brand Ram
Corsair 620
Gigabyte DS3.

although, for 2500 you could do SLI 8800gts (which would be faster than a single gtx). throw in a seagate barracuda (.10 series) and a tuniq tower/scythe ninja and you're good to go.

I, for one, hate the CM stacker. Your best best is looking through newegg pics and finding those that look 'pretty' and then narrowing down from there based on features that you want. I'm incredibly partial to the antec P18x series, and anything by lian li.

Well go for the Scythe Ninja, Tuniq Tower 120 or the Thermalright Ultra and throw in a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 drive of your choice.

I don't have any preferences when it comes to hard drives, ram , coolers etc ( they have to be somewhat good non the less ), my main concern is....the pc case. I didn't found anything that I really like and is aluminium.
I really dislike the antec products and the lian-li thought they are great they are too classic looking. I need some futuristic looking cases to say at least. The CM stalker or the thermaltake dex are pretty nice. dunno though, but one thing is for sure : i'm not going over 200 for a case.

And I specified that I won't do sli unless someone can explain why it would be better to do so. My idea is that you buy a good card then upgrade and so on, but going sli will force you to remain with those cards for a longer period of time. Plus the benefits are not 100% from adding a second card. I don't know if you get me but sometimes the newer generation that comes is better by a procent of 80% than the previous card.

Again, thx for all the advices. I will make the final decision ( meaning buying what you guys advice ) on august , when I'm gone on holidays.

that 80% figure it way off, but you have a point. I'm merely pointing out that if you have the money (and really, the SLI 8800gts would only be marginally more expensive than a gtx) then it *would* be faster.

fake edit: why not go with an 8800 ultra instead?

Sorry if I missed it, but what size monitor will you be gaming on?

To answer the first question : an ultra is not worth it ( in my case ). Powerful card but I'm more into best of the buck not best of the market. I could consider it but having the money doesn't mean I should spend it all...beer ain't cheap

I didn't specify the monitor, though I've found this beast http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001096

I know I haven't been quite "to the point". But if you want to know for what I need it exactly let's give some examples like : crysis or w/e directx 10 games will appear. I can wait for the next gen directx 10 cards. Time isn't a concern, I'm not rushed.

Thx again guys, I appreciate it
